Eco lift vs. Full Lift kit

Eco lift vs. Full Lift kit

One of the most common questions we get at Kren Offroad: "Do I need an eco lift or a full lift kit?" The answer depends on what you're doing with your ute, what tyres you want to run, and how much you're loading it. Here's the real-world breakdown for New Zealand conditions.

What Is an Eco Lift?

An eco lift โ€” also called a levelling kit โ€” gives your ute a modest 25โ€“40mm height increase. It's designed to correct the factory rake (most utes sit lower at the front than the rear from the factory) and level the stance out.

Eco lifts typically use coil spacers, strut spacers, or slightly uprated springs paired with the factory shocks. They're a cost-effective way to improve the look and function of your ute without a full suspension overhaul.

Eco Lift โ€” Quick Facts

๐Ÿ“ Lift height: 25โ€“40mm (1โ€“1.5 inches)

๐Ÿ›ž Tyre clearance: Fits up to 265/70R17 or 265/65R18 on most utes

๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost: $400 โ€“ $900 NZD (parts only)

๐Ÿ”ง Install time: 2โ€“4 hours (DIY or workshop)

๐Ÿš— Ride quality: Very close to factory โ€” slightly firmer

When an Eco Lift Makes Sense

An eco lift is the right call if you're running a daily-driven ute that sees mostly sealed roads with occasional gravel, farm tracks, or light off-road use. It's also a smart choice if you've added a bullbar and want to level the front end back out โ€” a steel bullbar adds 40โ€“60kg to the nose, which compresses the front springs and drops the ride height.

If you're towing a boat or trailer under 2,000kg and not loading the tub heavily, an eco lift handles that fine. The factory shocks are still doing most of the work, and the spacer or spring just takes up the initial sag.

What Is a Full Lift Kit?

A full lift kit replaces the factory springs and shocks with purpose-built components โ€” upgraded coils or leaf packs at both ends, matched shock absorbers (often remote-reservoir or foam-cell), new U-bolts, greasable shackles, and sometimes extended brake lines and diff-drop kits.

This is a complete suspension system designed to work together. The springs are tuned for the weight of your accessories (bullbar, winch, drawers, canopy, roof rack), and the shocks are valved to control the new ride height under all conditions.

Full Lift Kit โ€” Quick Facts

๐Ÿ“ Lift height: 40โ€“75mm (1.5โ€“3 inches)

๐Ÿ›ž Tyre clearance: Fits 285/70R17 (33") and above on most utes

๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost: $1,200 โ€“ $3,500 NZD (parts only)

๐Ÿ”ง Install time: 4โ€“8 hours (workshop recommended)

๐Ÿš— Ride quality: Significantly improved under load โ€” transformed off-road

When a Full Lift Kit Makes Sense

If any of these apply to you, a full lift kit is the way to go:

๐Ÿ”๏ธ You're doing regular off-road driving โ€” tracks, river crossings, mountain passes

๐Ÿ•๏ธ You've fitted a canopy, drawers, or touring setup and the rear is sagging

๐Ÿšœ You're towing 2,000kg+ regularly (boats, horse floats, car trailers)

๐Ÿ›ž You want to run 33" tyres or bigger

โšก You want a genuinely better ride than factory, loaded or unloaded

Full lift kits from brands like Dobinsons, RAW 4x4, and EFS are engineered for specific vehicle platforms and accessory weights. A good suspension shop will ask what you've got fitted (bullbar, winch, canopy, drawers) and recommend a spring rate to match โ€” this is critical to getting the ride quality right.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Eco Lift Full Lift Kit
Lift Height 25โ€“40mm 40โ€“75mm
Cost (NZD) $400 โ€“ $900 $1,200 โ€“ $3,500
Max Tyre Size 265/70R17 285/70R17 (33")+
Ride Quality (Unladen) Factory-like Slightly firmer
Ride Quality (Loaded) Bottoms out easily Controlled & composed
Towing Performance Light towing only Heavy towing capable
Off-Road Capability Light trails Serious off-road
DIY Install Yes โ€” straightforward Possible but workshop recommended
Shock Replacement Keeps factory shocks New matched shocks included
WoF Compliant โœ… Yes โœ… Yes (under 50mm lift in NZ)*

*In New Zealand, lifts up to 50mm (2 inches) generally don't require certification. Lifts above 50mm may require a Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) certification โ€” check with your local certifier.

The Real Question: What Are You Building?

Forget the spec sheets for a second. The decision really comes down to what kind of ute you're building:

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ The Daily Driver

Bullbar fitted, standard tyres or slightly oversized, occasional gravel road, maybe towing a tinny to the lake on weekends. Eco lift is your play. Levels the stance, handles the bullbar weight, costs under $900.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ The Touring Rig

Bullbar, winch, canopy, drawers, roof rack, 33" mud-terrains, towing a camper trailer up the Forgotten World Highway. Full lift kit, no question. Your factory suspension is already cooked under that weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a lift kit affect my WoF?

Lifts up to 50mm are generally WoF-compliant in New Zealand without additional certification. Above 50mm, you may need a Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) certification from an approved certifier. A reputable suspension kit designed for your specific vehicle won't cause WoF issues.

Can I fit a lift kit myself?

Eco lifts (spacers/levelling kits) are a manageable DIY job if you have jack stands, basic tools, and a spring compressor. Full lift kits involve replacing springs and shocks at all four corners, potentially swapping U-bolts and shackles โ€” a workshop with a hoist will get it done faster and safer. Budget $300โ€“$600 NZD for professional installation.

Do I need a lift kit if I'm fitting a bullbar?

Not necessarily, but it helps. A steel bullbar adds 40โ€“60kg to the front end, which compresses the factory springs and drops the nose. An eco lift at the front (or heavier-rated front springs) corrects this and keeps your headlights pointing where they should.

What lift kit do I need for 33" tyres?

Most NZ utes need a minimum 50mm (2 inch) lift to clear 285/70R17 (33") tyres without rubbing at full steering lock. Some vehicles also need minor guard trimming. An eco lift usually isn't enough โ€” a full lift kit with matched shocks gives you the clearance and the suspension travel to run 33s properly.

Eco lift first, then upgrade later?

This is a common approach and it works fine. Start with an eco lift to level the stance and fit slightly larger tyres. When you're ready to build out the full touring setup, upgrade to a complete lift kit. The eco lift components can be removed or sold second-hand โ€” they hold their value well.
