The number that quietly ends most caravan dreams is GCM (Gross Combination Mass), the most the whole rig — ute plus trailer, fully loaded — is legally allowed to weigh. On a Triton the GCM means you usually can't carry a full payload AND tow the maximum at the same time. Load the tray with firewood, a full tank, three adults and the dog, then hook up a 3-tonne van, and you'll blow past GCM without the trailer ever hitting its rated max.

  • Fitment: Triton generations are NOT interchangeable. ML/MN (2005-2015), MQ/MR (2015-2024) and MV (2024 on) all have different chassis mounts. Buy for your exact build year or it simply won't bolt up.
  • Material and coating: For a tow bar or rear bar, look for proper steel with a hot-dip or quality powder-coat finish. NZ coastal air and constant gravel-road grit will find every weak point in a cheap coating within a season.
  • Rated, not decorative: Recovery points must be engineer-rated with a stamped WLL (Working Load Limit). A factory tie-down hook is NOT a recovery point and will become a projectile under snatch load.
  • Serviceability: Can you re-torque it, replace a bush, or swap a damaged tow tongue without cutting the whole assembly off? Good gear is built to be maintained.
  • Honest weight ratings: Be wary of vague "heavy duty" claims with no numbers. A real rating is a number with a standard behind it.
  • LVVTA / ADR signalling: Reputable gear states its compliance. If a product is silent on standards, treat that as a red flag.

The temptation is always to buy the cheapest option first and "upgrade later". With towing gear that's a false economy — the cheap rear bar that rusts, or the unrated point that lets go mid-recovery, costs you far more than the dollars you saved. Buy once, buy rated, and you'll never think about it again.

NZ use-case: Molesworth Station

Molesworth Station is the perfect test of a tow rig. The road in is around 60km of unsealed high-country gravel, open only in summer, with steep grades, blind crests, corrugations and the odd ford. Tow a camper-trailer or off-road van up there and you'll feel exactly how well — or how badly — your Triton is set up. The corrugations work the suspension constantly, the climbs load the drivetrain and brakes, and the descents demand engine braking and a trailer that tracks straight without snaking.

This is where load-control suspension earns its keep. A loaded Triton on tired factory springs will sag at the rear, point the headlights at the trees, and porpoise over every corrugation — tiring to drive and genuinely unsafe with a van behind you. Upgraded shocks and correctly rated rear springs keep the rig level, settle the trailer, and let you actually enjoy the drive instead of white-knuckling it.
