4x4 Parts & Accessories in Levin

Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Levin and the rest of Horowhenua, from the beach settlements on the coast to the farms under the Tararua Range. We sell Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We're an online New Zealand store with no Levin shopfront: you order on the website, the gear comes to your door, and you fit it yourself or take it to your local mechanic. Our bullbars and lift kits are bolt-on, supplied with their fitting hardware, and picked for the utes and wagons Horowhenua people drive.

4x4 parts delivered to Levin

Levin is the largest town in Horowhenua and the seat of the district council, with about 20,500 people in its urban area. It sits on State Highway 1, east of Lake Horowhenua, about 95km north of Wellington and 50km south-west of Palmerston North. The town is a service centre for the surrounding rural area and a base for light manufacturing, and it's well connected: SH1 runs through the middle as Oxford Street, SH57 runs along its eastern edge, and the Capital Connection train stops here on the way to Wellington.

The wider district, home to around 38,400 people, stretches from the Tasman Sea coast right up to the tops of the Tararua Range. Much of it was once wetland and flax country and is now productive, flood-prone farmland. That gives Levin utes a split life: farm and contracting work on the flats during the week, and weekends spent on the beach at Waitārere or Foxton Beach, or heading for the road ends in the Tararua foothills to hunt and tramp. Soft sand, wet gravel and a loaded deck all reward the same upgrades, a solid bar up front and suspension that copes with weight.

We deliver across Levin and to Ōhau, Manakau, Waitārere Beach, Hōkio Beach, Foxton, Foxton Beach, Shannon and Tokomaru. Smaller parts travel by courier and bullbars by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent, which saves the classic mistake of ordering for the wrong model year.

Bullbars for Levin drivers

Our bullbars are made by Rockarmor, a steel bar brand built around the trucks Kiwis actually own. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper with a powder-coated steel bar, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each model rather than a universal fit.

Rockarmor bullbars that suit common Levin utes and wagons:

Fitting a steel bar takes two people but isn't complicated. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts onto the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it in the driveway, any Levin mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. A Rockarmor 12,000lb winch is good insurance if you drive on soft sand, and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights make the dark run home from the hills a lot easier.

Lift kits for Levin 4x4s

A bullbar and winch put extra weight on the front springs, and many owners lift the suspension at the same time to get the ride height and load capacity back. We sell two lift kit brands, each suited to a different kind of vehicle.

RAW 4x4 is the choice for current and recent utes. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit pairs front coils and rear leaf springs with nitrogen-charged shocks, and comes in load options to match how the vehicle is used, from light duty to towing a boat or trailer most weekends. Popular kits for Levin vehicles:

Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s still working around Horowhenua:

Lift kits bolt in, but they're a job for a hoist, and every one needs a wheel alignment once it's fitted. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.

Popular 4x4s in Levin and Horowhenua

The Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are the two utes you'll see most on Oxford Street. The Ranger bullbar for the PX2/PX3 and the Hilux bullbar for the N80 are the usual starting points, with a matching Hilux lift kit for trucks that carry weight. There are plenty of older Hilux too, and the Hilux N70 lift kit suits the 2005–2011 generation.

Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max utes are popular with tradies, and we carry the D-Max 2020–2024 GT Hoop alongside the Triton and Navara bars above. For beach-going families, the Toyota Prado is a common choice, and a Prado lift kit helps when it's towing a boat across the sand. Older Hilux Surf and Pajero wagons are covered by the Ultima kits above.

4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Levin

Horowhenua beaches. Waitārere Beach and Foxton Beach are popular stretches of sand near Levin, and driving is allowed along the whole Horowhenua coastline where there is public vehicle access. Police treat those beaches as public roads, so vehicles must be registered and warranted, drivers must be licensed, and normal road rules apply. The council cut the beach speed limit from the 100km/h open-road limit to 30km/h, and driving in the dunes isn't allowed. The council has fenced dunes at Foxton Beach to keep vehicles out. Stick to the firm sand, give swimmers and anglers plenty of room, and check for any new beach bylaw before you go.

The Tararua foothills. Tararua Forest Park starts in the hills just east of town. From the end of Queen Street East, Gladstone Road heads into the foothills, and Poads Road, about 15 minutes' drive from the town centre, crosses the Ohau River to a car park with a toilet and an intentions book, then a 15-minute walk across farmland to the park boundary. About 8km along Gladstone Road, past the Makahika Outdoor Centre, a car park at the Poulton Drive junction serves the Mangahao-Makahika track. These are access roads to tramping and hunting country, not 4WD tracks, so park up and walk in.

Mangahao Road (Shannon). North of Levin, Mangahao Road climbs from Shannon past Mangaore village and the Mangahao power station to a saddle and on to the Arapeti dam. DOC's track notes describe it as narrow and winding, so take it slowly, and the Mangahao end is the easiest way onto the Mangahao-Makahika track.

Further afield. For proper 4WD climbing, Takapari Road in the Pohangina Valley, reached through Ashhurst, climbs about 16km up into the Ruahine Range. DOC says it's open to vehicles but not maintained, and conditions on top can be extreme.

Clubs. The Levin 4WD Club is affiliated with the NZ Four Wheel Drive Association and has a Levin postal address; contact details are on the NZFWDA club directory. Nearby, the Manawatu 4WD Club meets at the Willowpark Tavern in Palmerston North, and the Tararua 4WD Club meets at the Paraparaumu RSA. A club is the best way onto private farm and forestry country, and the best place to learn recovery skills.

Fitting your parts in Levin

Everything we sell is designed for DIY fitting with ordinary hand tools, and every bullbar and lift kit arrives with its fitting hardware. If you'd rather not do it yourself, take the parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician. A bullbar is a straightforward bolt-on, and wiring lights or a winch is routine work for any auto-electrician. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment before the vehicle goes back on the road.

Levin 4x4 FAQs

Do you deliver to Levin?

Yes. We deliver across Levin and the rest of Horowhenua, including Ōhau, Manakau, Waitārere Beach, Hōkio Beach, Foxton, Foxton Beach, Shannon and Tokomaru. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars travel by freight.

Do you have a store in Levin?

No. Kren Bits is online only and has no shopfront in Levin or anywhere else. Order on the website or call us on 021 288 6816 and we'll help you choose the right part.

What's the most popular bullbar for Horowhenua utes?

Store-wide, the best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

Yes, if you're handy with tools. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. A lift kit needs spring compressors and a hoist or good stands, and a wheel alignment afterwards, so many owners hand that part to a workshop.

Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Levin?

Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop can fit our kits. Order the kit to your home, then book it in with the mechanic you already trust.

Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?

2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
