4x4 Parts & Accessories in Palmerston North
Kren Bits sends 4x4 parts and accessories to Palmerston North and the wider Manawatū: Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and LED driving lights. There's no Kren Bits shop in Palmy. We're an online-only New Zealand store, so you order on the website, we send it to your address, and you fit it yourself or hand it to your local mechanic. Every bullbar and lift kit we sell for the common Manawatū utes bolts on and comes with its fitting hardware. A capable home mechanic can do the job, and so can any workshop in town.
4x4 parts delivered to Palmerston North
Palmerston North is the main city of the Manawatū-Whanganui region, with about 90,000 people. It sits on the Manawatū Plains beside the Manawatū River, with the Tararua Range to the south and the Ruahine Range to the east. It's also a road and rail junction and a big freight distribution hub. Massey University and Linton Army Camp are major employers, and the farming country on every side keeps a lot of utes busy. On a normal week a Palmy truck might do the school run, a trip to a lifestyle block out past Ashhurst, and a run over the ranges to the Tararua district. The wind farms along those ridgelines, Te Āpiti, Tararua, Te Rere Hau and Turitea, are a reminder of how exposed and steep that country is.
Getting east has changed in the last few years. The Manawatū Gorge road closed after slips in 2017, and for years locals used the Saddle Road and the Pahīatua Track, both narrow and winding. In June 2025 Te Ahu a Tūranga, the 11.5km Manawatū Tararua Highway between Ashhurst and Woodville, opened to traffic. Plenty of Palmy utes now run that route every day. Many still use the old back roads too, and some of those gravel side roads are where a bullbar and decent suspension earn their keep.
Bullbars go to Palmerston North by freight and smaller parts go by courier. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent. The mistake we see most often is a bar or kit ordered for the wrong model year, and checking first saves everyone time.
If you're not sure what fits, use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for Palmerston North drivers
Most of our bullbars are Rockarmor, a steel bar range built for the trucks New Zealanders actually drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement bar in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights. It has mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and each bar is made for a specific model rather than using a universal bracket.
Rockarmor bars that suit the utes you see around the Manawatū:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
Fitting a steel bullbar takes two people, but it isn't complicated. You remove the factory bumper, bolt the bar to the chassis mounts, and move the indicators and any parking sensors across. If you'd rather not do it in the driveway, any Palmerston North mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. To finish the front end, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope and a pair of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. The lights help a lot on the unlit roads out to Pohangina, Aokautere and the range crossings.
Lift kits for Palmerston North 4x4s
A steel bar and winch put real weight on the front springs, so plenty of Manawatū owners lift the suspension at the same time. We stock two lift kit brands, and each suits different vehicles.
For modern utes we usually recommend RAW 4x4. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit comes with front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks. You can choose a load rating to suit how you use the truck, whether it's mostly empty commuting into the city or towing a trailer to the block every weekend. Popular picks:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mazda BT-50 2020+
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2023
Ultima 4x4 covers many of the older and less common 4x4s that are still working hard around the Manawatū:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — VW Amarok 2010–2024
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux Surf 180 / 4Runner 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
A mechanic with a hoist can bolt in a lift kit, and the vehicle always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. The 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you buy.
Popular 4x4s in Palmerston North and the Manawatū
The Toyota Hilux is everywhere in the Manawatū, from farm utes to tradie trucks. A Hilux bullbar for the N80, or the GT Hoop for the earlier 2012–2015 N70, is a common first upgrade. The Ford Ranger is just as common on Palmy streets, and the PX2/PX3 Ranger bullbar suits it.
Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton owners often fit a bar and lift together. Look at the D-Max lift kit for 2012–2017 trucks and the Triton MR bullbar for newer ones. For the Nissan Navara D40 there's the Navara D40 lift kit suits it. If you run a LandCruiser 70 series, there's a RAW 4x4 LandCruiser 76/78/79 lift kit too.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Palmerston North
Takapari Road (Ruahine Forest Park). Takapari Road is reached from Ashhurst along Pohangina Valley East Road. It climbs about 16km from farmland to the top of the Ruahine Range, with a gate where it enters the forest park. DOC describes it as open to vehicles but not maintained. It gets steeper and rougher past A-Frame Hut, and DOC warns to be ready for extreme weather up top. Go with a mate, check conditions, and turn back if it's wet.
The range roads: Saddle Road and the Pahīatua Track. These aren't 4WD tracks, but they are the old ways over the ranges east of the city. Both are narrow and winding, and they carried a lot of traffic while the gorge was closed. They're a good test of how well a loaded ute brakes and handles, and a sensible place to try a new set of driving lights.
Horowhenua and Manawatū beaches. The coast at Foxton Beach and Himatangi is an easy drive west of Palmy. Under the Land Transport Act these beaches count as roads, so vehicles must be registered and warranted and drivers must be licensed. Horowhenua District Council has also set a 30km/h speed limit on its beaches, and signs at the Foxton Beach entrance list the rules. Driving on the dunes is not allowed. Stick to the hard sand and keep clear of swimmers and anglers.
42 Traverse (Tongariro Forest). This is the classic central North Island 4WD trip, roughly a three-hour drive north. DOC opens it to vehicles from 1 December to 30 April only. A large landslip means vehicles can use either end but can't do the full 46km. It's a rough track with unbridged stream crossings, so take recovery gear.
Clubs. The Manawatū 4WD Club is based in Palmerston North and was formed in 1973. It's affiliated with the NZ Four Wheel Drive Association, and members have to carry first aid, communications and recovery gear on trips. The club runs an annual charity safari, which has covered about 200km of backcountry in and around the Waitōtara Valley. The Central Districts club, based out of Feilding, is also NZFWDA-affiliated. Contact details for both are on the NZFWDA club directory. Joining a club is the best way to get onto private farm and forestry country legally.
Fitting your parts in Palmerston North
Kren Bits parts are made for DIY. Each bullbar and lift kit comes with the hardware you need, and most owners with basic tools and a helper can fit them at home. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Palmerston North. They can fit a bar, wire in a winch or driving lights, or install a lift kit. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work. If you're unsure whether a change needs certification, ask before you fit it, not after.

What's the most popular bullbar for Manawatū utes?
Our best-selling Rockarmor bars store-wide include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, along with the GT Hoop range for the Hilux. All of them suit the utes you see around Palmerston North.

Any competent local mechanic or 4x4 workshop can fit our lift kits. They come with the parts and hardware needed, so take the kit to whoever you trust with your vehicle.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
The 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
