4x4 parts delivered to Richmond
Richmond is Tasman's biggest town and the base of Tasman District Council. It had 18,447 people at the 2023 census, about 13km south of Nelson, and it has grown quickly out into Richmond West, Templemore and Richmond South. Around it sit Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield and Māpua, a ring of orchard, vineyard and lifestyle-block country where a ute does everything from hauling bins at harvest to towing a horse float or a boat.
The ranges are close, too. The pine forests on the hills behind the town are working forestry country, and Mount Richmond Forest Park lies beyond them. Gravel, river crossings and steep forestry spurs are all within reach of a Richmond driveway. That's why the most popular upgrades here are a strong bullbar for the front end and a mild lift so the truck sits level once it's carrying a bar, a winch and a loaded tray.
Smaller parts come to Richmond by courier, and bullbars travel by freight. Give us your make, model and year and we'll confirm the correct part number before we pack anything. That one step avoids the most common return, which is a bar or kit ordered for the wrong model year.
You can check fitment with the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for Richmond drivers
We stock Rockarmor steel bullbars, made for the vehicles that dominate New Zealand driveways. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement bar in powder-coated steel. It has hoops that protect the grille and headlights, provision for a winch and driving lights, and model-specific mounts instead of a universal bracket.
Rockarmor bars suited to the utes and wagons around Richmond and the Waimea Plains:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Mitsubishi Triton MR
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar: Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
Fitting a bar is a two-person job but a simple one. The factory bumper comes off, the new bar bolts onto the chassis mounts, and you move the indicators and any parking sensors across. Any Richmond mechanic or auto-electrician can also fit it for you. For a complete front end, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for dark rural roads out towards Wakefield.
Lift kits for Richmond 4x4s
Steel up front adds weight over the front springs, so many Richmond owners do the suspension at the same time as the bar. We carry two lift kit brands for different vehicles.
RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and load options let you match the kit to your work: light commuting during the week, or an orchard trailer and full tray every day. Popular RAW kits for Richmond vehicles:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Isuzu D-Max 2012–2017
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
Ultima 4x4 fills the gaps for older and less common 4x4s, such as these:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: Toyota FJ Cruiser 2006–2010
Lift kits bolt in, but they're best fitted on a hoist, and they always need a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
Popular 4x4s in Richmond and Waimea
Around Richmond's car parks and the orchard roads out to Appleby and Hope, the Toyota Hilux is the truck you'll see most. Late-model owners usually start with a Hilux bullbar, while older N70 trucks suit the 2012–2015 GT Hoop and a Hilux N70 lift kit.
The Ford Ranger is just as much at home on Richmond building sites, and a Ranger bullbar is a common first buy. Triton owners can choose between the MQ Triton GT Hoop and a Triton lift kit for the 2018–2024 trucks. For D-Max owners there's the D-Max GT Hoop. Older Navara D22 utes, still common on lifestyle blocks, have the Ultima D22 kit, and Prado families can fit the RAW Prado 150 kit.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Richmond
Mount Richmond Forest Park. DOC's access notes for the park list several back roads where a 4WD vehicle is recommended because of challenging terrain and river crossings. They include Top Valley Road (open for 4WD from Staircase Stream to Jubilee Flat and the Forks car park), Jacksons Creek Road, Staircase Road towards Lake Chalice and Mt Patriarch, Te Rou Road and Bartlett's Creek Road. DOC also says roads through OneFortyOne-managed forests can close at any time for fire danger, and that some roads, including Aniseed Valley Road into the Roding waterworks reserve, are closed.
Waimea and Hira forests. Tasman Pine Forests manages much of the pine on the hills around Richmond. Its access rules say Ben Nevis Road in Waimea Forest has a public easement for motor vehicles in daylight hours only. Boundary Road in Waimea Forest and Richmond Forest's Heslops Road are not open to public vehicles, and most other recreation needs a forest permit. Check the forest closures list before you head up, especially in summer.
Rainbow Road. The best-known back-country drive within reach of Richmond starts at St Arnaud, via Tophouse Road. DOC describes the 112km Rainbow Road through Rainbow Station to Hanmer Springs as a toll road suitable only for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, with no cell coverage and closures without notice for snow, slips or fire risk. During the station's seasonal access period, its gates are open from 7am to 7pm.
Clubs. NZFWDA's directory doesn't list a separate Tasman club. Richmond drivers usually join the Nelson 4 Wheel Drive Club, which meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Ocean Lodge, Tāhunanui, a short drive up the highway. The club runs trips well beyond the region and has written about weekends on West Coast tracks around Westport and the Denniston Plateau.
Fitting your parts in Richmond
Kren Bits gear is made for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights come with mounting hardware and use the factory chassis points, so a handy owner with a helper can usually fit a bar at home in a few hours.
Prefer to hand it off? Take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician. Get winch and driving-light wiring done by an auto-electrician if you're not confident with it. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment, and recheck the bolts once the truck has done a few hundred kilometres.
