4x4 parts delivered to Rotorua
Rotorua is best known for geysers, mud pools and its 17 lakes, but the district's biggest earner isn't tourism. Agriculture, forestry and fishing made up 10.7% of district GDP in 2024, more than twice the national share. The urban area is home to about 58,500 people, and roughly 78,000 live across the wider district. To the south-east lies Kaingaroa, the largest forest plantation in New Zealand, stretching from Lake Taupō in the south to Kawerau in the north.
So a Rotorua ute does a lot of gravel. Forestry crews, contractors and farm workers put trucks through gravel roads, steep skid sites and wet winters, and weekenders head off to the lakes, the trout streams or the bush with a boat or a dog box on the back. The upgrades that matter are protection and suspension: a steel bar that takes a knock, and a lift kit that carries a winch and a full load without bottoming out on rutted forestry roads.
Orders to Rotorua travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars and other large items go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent.

Bullbars for Rotorua drivers
Our bullbar range is Rockarmor, a steel bar brand made for the vehicles New Zealanders actually work. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper with powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights and mounting points for a winch and driving lights. Each bar is designed for one model, so it bolts to that vehicle's own chassis points.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit Rotorua work and forestry utes:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
A steel bullbar is a two-person job with ordinary tools. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it at home, any Rotorua mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. For forestry roads and dark nights out by the lakes, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. Hilux N80 owners who drive rough tracks can protect the sills with Rockarmor rock sliders.
Lift kits for Rotorua 4x4s
A bar and winch load the front, and a work ute with a tray of gear loads the rear. A lift kit brings back ride height and clearance and gives the springs proper capacity. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for trucks that run light or ones that carry every day. Good picks for Rotorua:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Isuzu D-Max 2012–2017
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Ultima 4x4 covers the older trucks that are still doing the hard yards:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
Lift kits bolt in but are best done by a mechanic with a hoist, and every one needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
Popular 4x4s in Rotorua and the lakes district
Forestry and farm work keep the Toyota Hilux at the top of the list. Late-model trucks suit the Hilux GT Hoop bullbar, N70s take the N70 Hilux lift kit, and older LN-series utes are still common on the LN105/106 Ultima kit. The Ford Ranger is the other big name — a Ranger bullbar is a common first upgrade.
Behind them come the Isuzu D-Max, the Navara D40 and D22 and the Mitsubishi Triton, with the Triton MR bullbar for current models. LandCruiser 70 Series utes and wagons suit the LandCruiser 70 lift kit, and families towing boats to the lakes often run a Prado, which takes the Prado 150 bullbar.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Rotorua
Kaingaroa and Rotoehu forests (permit only). Kaingaroa's trees are owned by Kaingaroa Timberlands, which holds a forestry licence over land returned to the Central North Island iwi in 2009. Recreational access to the Kaingaroa and Rotoehu forests is by permit, issued mainly for hunting, fishing and gamebird shooting, and driver permits are available. Every vehicle needs a current WOF, registration and at least third-party insurance. The automatic gates open from 6am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays, and you must be out by 6pm or risk losing your permit. During the fire season, vehicle access is only allowed when fire danger has been low for an extended period. This isn't a free-for-all 4WD park, so stick to the permit conditions.
Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park. About 90km south-east of Rotorua off Te Whaiti Road via SH38, Whirinaki protects ancient podocarp and beech forest, and DOC lists four-wheel driving among its activities. The most popular entrance is past Minginui village and up River Road to the car park. Further on, gravel Okahu Road leaves Ruatāhuna Road at Ngaputahi and leads to the Mid Okahu Road campsite. DOC warns that the end of Okahu Road is known to flood and that tracks wash out regularly from April to August.
SH38 through Te Urewera. From Murupara, SH38 continues through Te Urewera to Lake Waikaremoana and on to Wairoa. It's been one of the last state highways in the country with unsealed sections, so expect stretches of gravel and slow going in the wet.
TECT All Terrain Park. On SH36 between Rotorua and Tauranga, TECT Park's motorsport area is leased by Te Matai Motorsport and associated with clubs including the Bay of Plenty 4WD Club. The Geyserland 4WD Club has run its Tough Truck Challenge there. Note that Rotorua's best-known forest, Whakarewarewa, is mountain-bike country with more than 150km of trails, not a 4WD area.
Clubs. Rotorua has three NZFWDA-affiliated clubs. The Geyserland 4WD Club meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of the month at Our Backyard Pub. Sulphur City 4Wheelers and the Land Rover Enthusiasts Club (Rotorua) are also affiliated. Joining a club is the easiest way into organised trips and the safest way to learn.
Fitting your parts in Rotorua
Kren Bits parts are made for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights fit with hand tools, stands and a second pair of hands. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician — any of them can fit a bar or wire in lights. Lift kits are easiest on a hoist, and always book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
Rotorua 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Rotorua?
Yes — across Rotorua and the lakes district, including Ngongotahā, Lynmore, Western Heights, Hillcrest and Koutu, and out to Mamaku, Kaingaroa, Murupara and rural delivery addresses. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight.
Do you have a store in Rotorua?
No — Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfronts. Order on the website or call 021 288 6816 and we'll help you find the right part.
What's the most popular bullbar for Rotorua utes?
Store-wide, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes. Our bars and kits bolt on and come with fitting hardware. A bullbar is a two-person job with basic tools; a lift kit is more involved and easiest on a hoist. Get a wheel alignment afterwards.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Rotorua?
Fit it yourself, or take the kit to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop — any competent workshop can install it and arrange the alignment.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
Our 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
