4x4 Parts & Accessories in Southland

Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories right across Southland, including Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. Southland covers about 31,000 square kilometres, from the dairy plains around Invercargill and Gore to the coast at Bluff and Riverton and the mountains of Fiordland, home to New Zealand's largest national park. About 105,000 people live in the region. Kren Bits is an online store with no shops in Southland. You order online, the parts are sent to you, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bars and kits bolt on and come with fitting hardware.

Towns we deliver to in Southland

Our Invercargill page covers local vehicles, Ōreti Beach rules and nearby tracks and clubs in detail:

We also deliver to Southland's smaller towns and the farms around them:

  • Gore: Southland's biggest town after Invercargill, about 64km north-east of Invercargill on SH1, split by the Mataura River and serving the farms in the Hokonui foothills.
  • Te Anau: on the shore of Lake Te Anau, the South Island's largest lake, and the gateway to Fiordland and the Milford Road.
  • Winton: a dairy service town on SH6, about 30km north of Invercargill on the road to Queenstown.
  • Bluff: Invercargill's port, home of the Foveaux Strait oyster fleet and the ferry to Stewart Island / Rakiura, with Tiwai Point across the harbour.
  • Riverton: Southland's oldest permanent settlement, on the Jacobs River Estuary about 30km west of Invercargill, at the far end of Ōreti Beach.

Smaller parts travel by courier and bullbars by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent, or call 021 288 6816.

Bullbars for Southland utes

Southland runs on farming. The region had about 591,600 milking cows in 2019–20, roughly 12% of the national herd, and Fonterra's Edendale plant is described as the world's largest raw milk processing plant. Farm utes cover a lot of gravel, and a strong front end pays for itself. Most of our bars are Rockarmor, a powder-coated steel range. The GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper, has hoops that protect the grille and headlights, and takes a winch and driving lights. Bars that suit common Southland vehicles:

For back-country trips to Mavora or the Eyre Mountains, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. Hilux N80 owners can also protect the sills with Rockarmor rock sliders.

Lift kits for Southland 4x4s

RAW 4x4 2-inch kits include front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for modern utes. Options include the Hilux N80, Navara D40, D-Max 2012–2017 and LandCruiser 76/78/79 kits. Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common vehicles, such as the Hilux LN105/106, Navara D22 and Pajero V7#.

Kits around 2 inches are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier. Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards.

4x4 tracks and clubs across Southland

Ōreti Beach. The 26km beach west of Invercargill is legal to drive on, but Police treat it as a road: the limit is 30km/h, normal road rules apply, and the council bylaw keeps all vehicles off the sand dunes. See our Invercargill page for the full rules.

Mavora Lakes Conservation Park. Reached on gravel roads off SH94 between Mossburn and Te Anau. Vehicles going past the gate on the North Mavora Lake track must register online with DOC for the gate code. The track to Careys Hut suits 4WDs, and vehicles aren't allowed beyond Boundary and Forks huts. DOC has warned before that vehicle damage around Mavora and the Borland area could lead to restrictions, so stay on formed tracks and keep out of wetlands, riverbeds and dunes.

Eyre Mountains / Taka Ra Haka. A 4WD road climbs Mount Bee from the end of Irthing Road, with access to the upper Irthing and Cromel valleys. It crosses private land, so DOC says you need landowner approval with at least two days' notice. Access via Eyre Creek Station is closed indefinitely.

Fiordland. Fiordland National Park covers much of western Southland. It is mostly uninhabited mountain, fiord and lake country with some of the highest rainfall in New Zealand. Check DOC's rules before taking a vehicle anywhere off the formed roads.

Clubs. The NZ Four Wheel Drive Association lists two affiliated Southland clubs: the Southland Land Rover Club in Invercargill and Southern Mayhem. The Southern Trailblazers and the Clutha 4WD Club have run 4WD trials demonstrations at the Southern Field Days at Waimumu near Gore. DOC notes that outside the main public access points you need permission to cross private roads and pastoral run land, and a club is often the easiest way in.

Fitting your parts

Everything we sell is designed for DIY and comes with fitting hardware. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. If you'd rather not fit parts yourself, take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Southland, from Te Anau to Gore. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
