4x4 Parts & Accessories in Upper Hutt
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories throughout Upper Hutt, from Trentham, Silverstream, Wallaceville and Pinehaven to Te Mārua, Kaitoke and the rural roads of the Akatarawa Valley. We stock Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We're a New Zealand online store with no Upper Hutt shopfront: you order online, the parts come to your door, and you either fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bars and kits are bolt-on and come with the fitting hardware, so a handy owner or any local workshop can install them.
4x4 parts delivered to Upper Hutt
Upper Hutt is home to about 47,000 people, but by land area it's the third-largest city council in New Zealand at around 540 square kilometres. That's because the city stretches well beyond its suburbs into the Remutaka and Akatarawa ranges. It sits at the top of the Hutt River floodplain, State Highway 2 runs through the middle of town and up over the Remutaka Hill to the Wairarapa, and the winters are colder and frostier than in central Wellington. Lifestyle blocks, back-country roads and forest parks are all on the doorstep. Typical upgrades are a bar for the hill road at night, a lift for forest tracks, and a winch for when the weather turns.
Orders to Upper Hutt go by courier, and bullbars and other large items travel by freight. Let us know your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent. Model-year mix-ups cause most of the fitment problems we see, so it's worth checking.
The vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com narrows the store down to your truck, or you can call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for Upper Hutt drivers
Our bullbar range is Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed around the utes and wagons common in New Zealand. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper entirely. It's powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts ready for a winch and driving lights, and a fit made for each specific model.
Rockarmor bullbars suited to Upper Hutt 4x4s:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MR
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Fitting a bullbar takes two people but it's not a hard job. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts onto the chassis mounts, and the indicators, fog lights and any sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it yourself, any Upper Hutt mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. For a complete front end, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights, which are worth having on the Remutaka Hill on a dark winter evening. Hilux N80 owners heading into forest country can also add Rockarmor steel rock sliders to protect the sills.
Lift kits for Upper Hutt 4x4s
A steel bar and winch add plenty of weight over the front axle. A matched lift kit brings the ride height back up and gives you more clearance for ruts, washouts and fords. We stock two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 is our main range for modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and you can choose a load rating to suit a light weekday truck or one loaded with camping gear and recovery kit every weekend. Good choices for Upper Hutt vehicles:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Prado 150 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV
Ultima 4x4 kits cover older and less common 4x4s:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux Surf 180 Series 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota FJ Cruiser 2006–2010
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN105/LN106 1989–1997
A lift kit bolts in, but it's best done on a hoist, and every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before building further.
Popular 4x4s in Upper Hutt
With forest parks this close, Upper Hutt has plenty of trucks that get used off-road as well as on it. The Toyota Hilux is a common sight here. The N80 Hilux bullbar and Hilux lift kit make a natural pair, and the 2005–2011 N70 and 2012–2015 N70 bars cover older Hiluxes. Ford Ranger owners can fit the PX2/PX3 GT Hoop or, on a newer truck, the Next Gen Ranger GT Hoop.
Toyota wagon owners are covered by the LandCruiser 200 bullbar, the Prado 150 bullbar, and the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit. Older LandCruiser builds can use the FJ80 rock sliders. Navara, D-Max and Triton owners are covered too, with the Navara D40 lift kit, the D-Max GT Hoop and the Triton MQ GT Hoop.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Upper Hutt
Akatarawa Forest. Upper Hutt is the home of Akatarawa Forest. It is a Greater Wellington regional park of about 15,000 hectares of native and plantation forest within the city's boundary, used for 4WD trips, trail biking, hunting, horse riding and mountain biking. The rules matter here. Under the Motorised Recreation Code developed by Greater Wellington and the Akatarawa Recreational Access Committee (ARAC), casual 4WD trips are not permitted. Organised 4WD and side-by-side trips need a current ARAC-certified trip leader who carries the access permit. On the trip, keep to designated routes, stay under 30km/h and pass walkers, riders and cyclists at walking speed. Cell coverage is limited, so carry a map, first aid, tools and a tow rope, and travel in a group. Motorised access to the Puketiro and Valley View plantation blocks is only allowed on organised Greater Wellington club events.
Akatarawa Road. The public way through the ranges is Akatarawa Road, which leaves State Highway 2 at Upper Hutt and runs about 30km over the 450-metre Akatarawa Saddle to Reikorangi and Waikanae. It's narrow and winding, crosses several streams through the Tararua foothills, and isn't suitable for long vehicles. At the Upper Hutt end, Karapoti Road leads to the Karapoti Gorge area, known for mountain biking and trail bike riding.
Kaitoke and Pākuratahi. At Kaitoke, about 9km north of Upper Hutt on SH2, Kaitoke Regional Park covers about 2,860 hectares, including the upper Hutt River gorge and the area used for exterior shots of Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings. Next door, the roughly 8,000-hectare Pākuratahi Forest holds the Remutaka Rail Trail from Kaitoke to Summit. Vehicle gates open from 6am to 6pm in winter and to 8pm during daylight saving, and logging trucks may be using the plantation roads, so follow the signs. These parks are for walking, biking, camping and horse riding rather than 4WD tracks, but they're great camping and day-trip spots for a well-set-up 4x4.
Clubs. The NZFWDA lists the Featherston Family 4x4 Club with an Upper Hutt address. The Cross Country Vehicle Club (Wellington), one of the larger clubs in the country with about 250 members, is an ARAC member. Lower Hutt's Capital Cruisers 4WD Club and Windy City Off-Roaders, and Wellington's Kiwi 4x4 Club, are all within easy reach. Since Akatarawa 4WD access runs through organised club trips with certified leaders, joining a club is the practical way to drive your own backyard.
Fitting your parts in Upper Hutt
Every Kren Bits part is designed for DIY fitting. Each one bolts to factory mounting points and comes with the hardware in the box, with no cutting or welding needed. With a flat floor, a decent socket set and someone to help lift, a bullbar is a weekend job. If you'd rather hand it over, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Upper Hutt. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment so the tyres wear evenly and the truck tracks straight on SH2.
Upper Hutt 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Upper Hutt?
Yes. We deliver across the city, including Trentham, Silverstream, Heretaunga, Wallaceville, Pinehaven, Totara Park, Māoribank, Te Mārua, Kaitoke, Whitemans Valley and the Akatarawa Valley. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars travel by freight.
Do you have a store in Upper Hutt?
No. Kren Bits is online only and doesn't have a shopfront anywhere. Order at krenbits.com or call the team on 021 288 6816 for fitment help.
What's the most popular bullbar for Upper Hutt 4x4s?
Across the whole store, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, along with the GT Hoop range for the Toyota Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. A lift kit is easier on a hoist and needs a wheel alignment afterwards. If you'd prefer, any local mechanic can do either.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Upper Hutt?
Take it to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or suspension specialist. Use whichever Upper Hutt workshop you trust and get the wheel alignment done at the end.
Do I need a permit to 4WD in the Akatarawa Forest?
Yes. Casual 4WD trips aren't allowed. 4WD access is for organised trips led by an ARAC-certified trip leader carrying a Greater Wellington access permit, which in practice means going with a recognised club. Lift kits also have rules: our 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles, but bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
