4x4 Parts & Accessories in Waikanae
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Waikanae, Waikanae Beach and the valleys behind them — Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We're an online-only New Zealand store, not a local shop: you order on the website, the parts are sent to your address, and you fit them yourself or have your local mechanic do it. The bars and kits we carry for popular utes and wagons are bolt-on, come with the hardware you need, and are chosen so a handy owner or any local workshop can fit them.
4x4 parts delivered to Waikanae
Waikanae is the northern end of Wellington's commuter network — the last stop on the Kāpiti Line — and home to just under 13,000 people at the 2023 Census. Since the Kāpiti Expressway opened in 2017, SH1 bypasses the town centre, and the town has spread between two very different edges. On one side is Waikanae Beach, a long, quiet stretch of sand looking out to Kapiti Island about 4km offshore. On the other, the land climbs into the bush of the Hemi Matenga reserve and back into the Reikorangi Basin, where the Waikanae River starts its run to the sea.
That inland side is what sets Waikanae apart from the rest of the coast. Akatarawa Road winds up the Reikorangi valley, over the Akatarawa Saddle and down to the Hutt Valley via Cloustonville, a winding back road between the coast and the hills. Owners who live out that way, run lifestyle properties in the foothills or tow a boat or horse float up and down the valley put real demands on their trucks, and that's where protection and suspension upgrades earn their place.
Orders to Waikanae arrive by courier through our New Zealand network, with bullbars and larger parts travelling by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the right part number before we send it — model year and trim make more difference than most people expect.

Bullbars for Waikanae drivers
Our bars come from Rockarmor, a steel bullbar brand made for the vehicles common on New Zealand roads. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement bar in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights and built-in provision for a winch and driving lights. Each bar is designed for one specific model so it mounts squarely to that vehicle's chassis — not a universal bar with adapter plates.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit the vehicles around Waikanae:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MR
Fitting a steel bar is a two-person job, not a complicated one. Off comes the factory bumper, the bar bolts onto the chassis mounts, and indicators and sensors move across. If you'd prefer not to do it at home, any Waikanae mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. For night driving on the Akatarawa or Reikorangi roads, add Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights, and a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch if you go further off the seal.
Lift kits for Waikanae 4x4s
A bar and winch add weight up front, while a boat, caravan or float on the towbar loads up the rear. A lift kit puts the ride height back and gives the springs the capacity to match. We carry two brands for different vehicles.
RAW 4x4 suits modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit comes with front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for lightly loaded trucks or ones that tow and carry daily. Good picks for Waikanae:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2023
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Ultima 4x4 looks after older and less common 4x4s:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — VW Amarok 2010–2024
Lift kits bolt in but are easiest for a mechanic with a hoist, and you'll need a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
Popular 4x4s in Waikanae
Waikanae leans towards comfortable wagons that can tow. The Toyota Prado is a staple, often fitted with a Prado bullbar and a Prado 150 lift kit for caravan and boat duty. LandCruisers are common too — the LandCruiser 200 bullbar suits the big wagons, and the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit suits working 76s, 78s and 79s on rural properties.
Utes are just as visible. The Hilux leads, with the 2012–2015 Hilux bullbar and N80 options, followed by the Ford Ranger, the Mitsubishi Triton (look at the Triton MQ bullbar for 2015–2018 trucks), the Isuzu D-Max and the Navara D40. Older Pajeros and LN-series Hiluxes still turn up on lifestyle blocks around Reikorangi.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Waikanae
Waikanae Beach and the northern foreshore. Waikanae is the closest place to Wellington on the Kāpiti Coast where general beach driving is still allowed. Under Kāpiti Coast District Council's Beach Bylaw, cars and 4WDs can use the foreshore from Olliver Grove in north Waikanae up to the southern end of Rodney Avenue, Te Horo, at a maximum of 20km/h. Never drive on the dunes, give way to people, horses and dogs, and note that motorbikes are banned from every Kāpiti beach.
Waikanae River estuary — no vehicles. South of that zone, the estuary is off limits. Greater Wellington's natural resources rules have banned private vehicles from the Waikanae estuary since 2015, driving within the Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve has always been illegal, and bollards at the Tutere Street car park block vehicle entry. Leave the truck at the car park.
Hemi Matenga and Reikorangi. The hills behind town are for walking, not driving. Hemi Matenga Memorial Park Scenic Reserve is around 330 hectares of forest climbing to 514m, with one of the country's most extensive kohekohe woodlands and DOC walking tracks — a good day out on foot, with your 4x4 parked at the road end. Further in, the Reikorangi Basin is where the Waikanae River begins, and Akatarawa Road is a scenic drive through it to the Hutt Valley.
Akatarawa Forest. For genuine off-road driving, Akatarawa Forest is the regional option — about 15,000 hectares between the Kāpiti Coast and Upper Hutt, managed by Greater Wellington. From Waikanae, the closest entrances are Maungakotukutuku Road (via Waterfall Road off SH1, south of Paraparaumu) and the Karapoti Road and Bridge Road entrances off the Upper Hutt end of Akatarawa Road. Every driver needs a permit through MyGW, and 4WD trips must be organised through the Akatarawa Recreational Access Committee (ARAC) with a certified trip leader, staying on mapped tracks at 30km/h.
Clubs. Waikanae has its own NZFWDA-affiliated club: the Kapiti Family 4WD Club, with a contact address at Waikanae Beach. The Tararua 4WD Club meets at the Paraparaumu RSA, just down the expressway, and Wellington-based clubs such as the Cross Country Vehicle Club, Capital Cruisers and Windy City Off-Roaders are also affiliated. A club is the easiest way to get trained up and onto the Akatarawa tracks.
Fitting your parts in Waikanae
Kren Bits parts are made for DIY fitting. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights go on with hand tools, stands and a helper. If you'd rather hand it over, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician — any of them can do it. Lift kits are best on a hoist, and always book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
Waikanae 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Waikanae?
Yes — to Waikanae, Waikanae Beach, Reikorangi, Peka Peka and Te Horo, plus Paraparaumu, Ōtaki and the rest of the Kāpiti Coast. Smaller parts travel by courier and bullbars by freight.
Do you have a store in Waikanae?
No — Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfronts. Order on the website or call 021 288 6816 and we'll help you choose.
What's the most popular bullbar for Kāpiti utes?
Store-wide, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes. Our bars and kits bolt on and include fitting hardware. A bullbar takes two people and basic tools; a lift kit is easier on a hoist. Book a wheel alignment after the suspension is done.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Waikanae?
Fit it yourself, or take the kit to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop — they can bolt it in and book the wheel alignment at the same time.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
Our 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
