4x4 Parts & Accessories in Wellington
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Wellington City, from the CBD and Te Aro out to Karori, Johnsonville, Miramar, Island Bay and the rural edge at Mākara and Ōhāriu. We stock Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. Kren Bits is a New Zealand online store with no Wellington shopfront: you order online, we send it to your address, and you fit it yourself or have your local mechanic do it. The bars and kits are bolt-on and come with their fitting hardware, so a capable home mechanic or any Wellington workshop can do the install.
4x4 parts delivered to Wellington
Wellington City is home to around 210,000 people, and it's a harder place on a vehicle than the population figures suggest. Much of the city is built on steep hillsides that rise sharply from the harbour, so plenty of driveways and suburban streets are tight, steep and narrow. It's also the windiest city in the world by average wind speed, sitting right at the mouth of Cook Strait. Beyond the suburbs the city runs out into rural Mākara and Ōhāriu, with farm roads and lifestyle blocks on the city's western edge. For trade utes working the port and the building sites, weekend 4x4s heading for the south coast, and Wellingtonians who load up the truck and head over the hill to the Wairarapa, the popular upgrades are front protection and a modest suspension lift to carry the extra gear.
Orders to Wellington arrive by courier, and the big items like bullbars travel by freight. Give us your make, model and year and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent, because getting the model year wrong is the most common mistake we see on bars and kits.
Want to check fitment yourself? The vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com filters the store to your truck, or you can call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for Wellington drivers
Our bullbars come from Rockarmor, a steel bar brand made around the utes and wagons New Zealanders actually drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper entirely. It's powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, built-in mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a model-specific fit instead of a generic bracket.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit Wellington utes and wagons:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Next Gen Ford Ranger
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
Fitting a steel bullbar takes two people but isn't complicated. The factory bumper and its reinforcement come off, the bar bolts onto the chassis mounts, and the indicators, fog lights and any parking sensors move across to the new bar. If your garage is a sloping hillside driveway and you'd rather not, any Wellington mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it for you. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope and a set of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for the dark run home over the Remutaka Hill.
Lift kits for Wellington 4x4s
A steel bar, winch and lights put a lot of extra weight on the front springs, so many owners lift the suspension at the same time to keep the truck level and get some extra clearance for unformed roads. We carry two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 is our choice for late-model utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit pairs front coils and rear leaf springs with nitrogen-charged shocks, and there are load options so you can match the kit to how the vehicle is used, whether that's an empty tray in town or a fully loaded canopy every trip. Good options for Wellington vehicles:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Prado 150 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mazda BT-50 2020+
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV
Ultima 4x4 fills the gaps for older and less common 4x4s:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux Surf 180 Series 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — VW Amarok 2010–2024
Lift kits bolt in, but the job is much easier on a hoist, and every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you buy.
Popular 4x4s in Wellington
Wellington's ute and wagon mix is a little different from the farming regions. Double-cab utes are the standard trade vehicle on building sites across the city, and the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Next Gen Ranger are a common sight, along with the Toyota Hilux. For a Hilux bullbar, the GT Hoop for the N80 is the obvious pick, and the 2012–2015 N70 and 2005–2011 N70 versions cover the older trucks. Hilux owners after a lift can look at the RAW N80 kit or the RAW N70 kit.
Wagons suit families who want one vehicle for both the school run and a weekend trip. The Prado 150 and the LandCruiser 200 are well covered, and the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit suits the 76, 78 and 79. Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara owners are covered too: the D-Max 2012–2017 lift, the Triton MR GT Hoop and the Navara D40 Premium bar.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Wellington
Te Kopahou Reserve and the south coast. The city's own 4x4 road starts at the western end of Ōwhiro Bay. Beyond the old quarry past the Te Kopahou Visitor Centre, the coast road is unformed and suitable for 4WD vehicles only. According to Wellington City Council it's open to 4WDs every day except Sunday, when the gate is closed and only walkers and mountain bikers can go through. The track runs along the coast towards Pariwhero Red Rocks and Sinclair Head (Te Rimurapa), where seals haul out. Stay well back from them. The council does close the gate to vehicles when the fire risk is high, as it did in February 2024, so check the council website before you go.
Remutaka Forest Park via Wainuiomata. About 12km south of Wainuiomata on the Coast Road, Catchpool Valley is the main entrance to the DOC-managed Remutaka Forest Park, with a campground and picnic areas. The access road has a ford: if it's running, DOC asks you to park before it and walk in. The gate opens at 6am and closes at 8pm in summer and 6pm in winter.
Akatarawa Forest (Upper Hutt). The region's best-known 4WD country is Greater Wellington's Akatarawa Forest, about 15,000 hectares of native and plantation forest behind Upper Hutt. Casual 4WD trips aren't permitted. 4WD access is for organised trips led by an ARAC-certified trip leader who carries the access permit, which in practice means you go in with a club.
Clubs. The NZFWDA lists the Cross Country Vehicle Club (Wellington) at Te Puni. It's one of the larger clubs in New Zealand, with about 250 members, and it belongs to the Akatarawa Recreational Access Committee. The club also does beach clean-ups on the south coast and services predator traps at Te Kopahou for the Capital Kiwi project. The Kiwi 4x4 Club and the Wellington Jeep Club are also listed in Wellington, with Capital Cruisers 4WD Club and Windy City Off-Roaders in Lower Hutt and the Tararua 4WD Club at Pukerua Bay. Joining a club is the way into permit-only country like the Akatarawas.
Fitting your parts in Wellington
All Kren Bits parts are made for DIY fitting. They bolt on, use the existing mounting points, and come with the hardware you need. If you have a flat garage, basic tools and a mate to help lift the bar, you can do a bullbar on a Saturday. If you don't have the space or the time, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician, and they can fit them for you. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment. It protects your tyres and keeps the steering right on Wellington's hills and the motorway.
Wellington 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Wellington?
Yes. We deliver right across Wellington City, including the CBD, Karori, Johnsonville, Tawa, Newlands, Miramar, Kilbirnie, Island Bay, Brooklyn, Ōwhiro Bay, Mākara and Ōhāriu. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars travel by freight.
Do you have a store in Wellington?
No. Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfronts anywhere in New Zealand. Order at krenbits.com or call the team on 021 288 6816 and we'll help you choose the right part.
What's the most popular bullbar for Wellington utes?
Across the whole store, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, along with the GT Hoop range for the Toyota Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes, if you're comfortable with spanners. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. A lift kit is easier on a hoist, and you'll need a wheel alignment once it's done. If you'd rather not, any local mechanic can fit both.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Wellington?
Take it to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or suspension shop. Choose whichever Wellington workshop you trust, then get the wheel alignment done afterwards.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
Our 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so talk to a certifier before you build beyond a standard 2-inch lift.
