4x4 Parts & Accessories on the West Coast
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories the length of the West Coast, from Westport and the Buller to Reefton, Greymouth and Hokitika. We stock Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, winches, rock sliders and driving lights. Kren Bits is an online-only New Zealand store with no shopfront on the Coast: you order online, we deliver to your door, and you fit the parts yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Every bar and kit is bolt-on and comes with its fitting hardware.
Towns we deliver to on the West Coast
The West Coast is New Zealand's least populous region, with 33,390 people at the 2023 census, stretched along roughly 600km of coastline from Kahurangi Point to Awarua Point. It's split into the Buller, Grey and Westland districts. Coal mining and alluvial gold are still part of the economy, and the Coast is the only region where coal mining is still widely practised. Dairy farming, forestry, fishing and tourism make up much of the rest, so the utes here work hard on wet gravel, mine roads and farm tracks, often a long way from the nearest town.
We don't have dedicated town pages on the Coast yet, but we deliver to all of it, including:
- Greymouth: the Coast's biggest town, with 8,337 people at the 2023 census, at the mouth of the Grey River. It's the western end of the Midland Line and the TranzAlpine, where SH7 from Reefton and North Canterbury meets SH6.
- Westport: 4,527 people at the mouth of the Buller River near Cape Foulwind, about 100km north of Greymouth and 222km from Nelson through the Buller Gorge. Fishing, coal mining and dairy farming are its main activities, and the Stockton opencast mine is described as New Zealand's largest.
- Hokitika: about 40km south of Greymouth near the mouth of the Hokitika River, founded in 1864 during the gold rush. Dairy processing is a major employer, with Westland Milk Products headquartered in the town, and pounamu carving is a key local craft.
- Reefton: about 80km north-east of Greymouth in the Inangahua Valley, where SH7 meets SH69. Gold was found here in the 1860s and 1870s, the Snowy River mine reopened the old Blackwater workings in 2020, and coal trains still run on the local line.
Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight, including to rural addresses. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent. Use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for West Coast utes
Our bullbars are made by Rockarmor, a steel range built for the utes and wagons New Zealanders drive. The GT Hoop is a full bumper replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a fit made for each model. On the long, dark stretches of SH6 and SH7, or a mine and farm road in the rain, that protection matters.
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job: the factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the lights and sensors move across. Any local mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it if you'd rather not. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch, which is worth having on the Coast's steep, rocky tracks, and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. Hilux and old LandCruiser owners can protect their sills with Hilux N80 rock sliders or LandCruiser FJ80 rock sliders.
Lift kits for West Coast 4x4s
RAW 4x4 2-inch (about 50mm) kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options to match how you use the truck. Popular picks include the Hilux N80 kit, the LandCruiser 76/78/79 kit, the Prado 150 kit and the Triton MR/MV kit.
Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, such as the Hilux Surf 180, the Pajero V7# and the Navara D22.
Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
4x4 tracks and clubs across the West Coast
Reefton to Big River (Victoria Forest Park). DOC lists the Reefton–Big River 4WD road as an advanced route for experienced four-wheel drivers. It starts 9km along Soldiers Road, just south of Reefton off SH7, past the Alborns Track car park, and takes about three to four hours to drive one way to Big River Hut and the old settlement. Expect gravel, rock and stream crossings that can flood in heavy rain. DOC warns of a slip about halfway that has left the road narrow with a 10m drop on one side, and says the road is managed by Buller District Council and not maintained. Check with the Reefton Visitor Centre before you go.
Inangahua to Denniston. An NZ4WD magazine trip report followed a 4WD track west from New Creek near Inangahua over to the Denniston Plateau, then down to Westport. It described rock slabs, a stream that doubled as the track, a Mackley River crossing that needed a winch after a slip, and a final rock step that took a snatch recovery. Moderately modified mid-size trucks got through, but it's not a trip to do alone.
Waiuta and the Grey Valley. The old gold town of Waiuta is signposted off SH7 about 21km south of Reefton, via Waiuta Road and Blackwater Road. DOC says the town grew to around 600 people by the 1930s and was abandoned after the Blackwater shaft collapsed in 1951. Some roads and tracks there are shared by walkers, drivers and bikers, so take it easy.
Hokitika's back valleys. Inland from Hokitika, the Styx Valley track starts off Dorothy Falls Road near Lake Kaniere and initially follows a rough 4WD route. The Arahura Valley head is reached via Milltown Road, 26km from Hokitika. Check DOC for current track and river conditions, which change fast on the Coast.
Clubs. NZFWDA's directory doesn't list a West Coast-based club. The nearest affiliated club is the Nelson 4 Wheel Drive Club, which has run trips based out of Westport to Charleston, the Denniston Plateau and the Mackley track, and meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Ocean Lodge, Tāhunanui.
Fitting your parts
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. They bolt to factory mounts and come with the hardware, so you can fit them at home with a helper or take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Greymouth, Westport, Hokitika or Reefton. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work, and recheck the bolts after your first rough track.
