Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Whakatāne and the Eastern Bay of Plenty — Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We're a New Zealand online store, not a Whakatāne shopfront: you order on the website, we deliver to your door or your rural address, and you fit the gear yourself or take it to your local mechanic. Every bar and kit we sell for the utes working the Eastern Bay is bolt-on and supplied with its fitting hardware.
4x4 parts delivered to Whakatāne
Whakatāne sits where the Whakatāne River meets the sea, with Ōhope's 11km beach close by and Whakaari / White Island about 48km offshore. Around 16,950 people live in the town, with another 21,000-plus across the wider district. Its economy is a working mix of forestry, agriculture, horticulture, fishing, tourism and manufacturing, including a large carton board packaging mill that started out in 1939. Inland, the Rangitāiki swamp was drained from 1904 to create the farmland of the Rangitāiki Plains, and the forest and back country of Te Urewera rise behind it.
That gives Whakatāne utes a varied week. Farm trucks run the flat country of the plains, forestry and contracting utes head into the hills, and on the weekend the boat goes on the back for the harbour or the long drive out to Ōpōtiki and the East Cape. A bullbar for stock, gravel and the occasional slip, and a lift kit to carry a bar, a winch and a heavy load, are the two upgrades that make the biggest difference.
Orders to Whakatāne travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars and other bulky items go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent.

Bullbars for Whakatāne drivers
Our bullbars are made by Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed around the trucks Kiwis drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement bumper in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights and mounting points for a winch and driving lights. Each one is built for a specific model, so it bolts to the vehicle's own chassis mounts.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit Eastern Bay utes:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N70 2012–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MR
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Fitting a steel bullbar takes two people and a basic tool kit. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors are transferred across. If you'd rather not do it yourself, any Whakatāne mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch for back-country roads and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for the long dark highways east and inland.
Lift kits for Whakatāne 4x4s
Hanging a steel bar and winch off the front, and loading the tray with gear or a dog box, pushes standard suspension hard. A lift kit restores the height and gives the springs real capacity. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 kits are for modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for light-duty trucks or ones that carry and tow every day. Good picks for the Eastern Bay:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux Surf 180 Series 1996–2002
A lift kit bolts in but is easiest for a mechanic with a hoist, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything bigger.
Popular 4x4s in Whakatāne and the Eastern Bay
As across most of rural New Zealand, the Toyota Hilux leads the way here. Newer trucks take the Hilux GT Hoop bullbar and the Hilux N80 lift kit, while plenty of 2005–2011 N70s suit the N70 Hilux bullbar. The Ford Ranger is right behind, and a Ranger bullbar is one of the first things owners add.
You'll also see plenty of Isuzu D-Max, Navara and Mitsubishi Triton utes — the Triton MQ bullbar suits 2015–2018 trucks and the D-Max lift kit suits 2012–2017 models. LandCruiser 70 Series utes are workhorses in the hills, and the Prado is a common tow vehicle for boats, with the Prado 150 lift kit a popular match.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Whakatāne
Whakatāne and Ōhope beaches. Don't plan on beach driving close to home. Whakatāne District rules don't allow vehicles on the beach except via authorised accessways, mainly for launching and retrieving boats, and you can't park on the sand afterwards. Registered and warranted quad bikes may be used for recreational fishing between high and low water springs at up to 20km/h. Ōhope Spit and the Otamarākau–Matatā–Whakatāne dunes also have seasonal restrictions from 1 September to 31 January to protect nesting birds. The council has been consulting on a new beaches bylaw, so check the latest rules.
Ōpōtiki beaches. East of Ōhiwa Harbour, Ōpōtiki District allows vehicles on most beaches at up to 15km/h, using marked entry and exit points and keeping to the hard sand below the high tide line. Vehicles are banned at all times from Ōhiwa Harbour, Ōhiwa Spit, Ōhope spit, the Waiotahe Estuary, Waiotahe Beach between the pou whenua and Appleton Road, and parts of Kelly's Beach at Tirohanga. Keep off the dunes and give way to people, dogs and horses.
Motu Road and Otipi Road. The Motu Road leaves SH35 a few kilometres east of Ōpōtiki and winds about 48km through the hills to come out opposite the historic Matawai Hotel on SH2. It was one of the longest and toughest stages of the Rally of New Zealand, and it's narrow, steep-sided and prone to slips. Off it, Takaputahi Road leads to the Whitikau Forks DOC camp, where a stony ford marks the start of Otipi Road, an old logging-style road of about 19km that climbs to around 900m before dropping more than 600 vertical metres to the Motu River. Go in a good vehicle, in fine weather, and tell someone your plans.
Whirinaki and Te Urewera. Inland, Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park lists four-wheel driving among its activities, with access past Minginui up River Road and along gravel Okahu Road from Ngaputahi; DOC warns the end of Okahu Road floods. SH38 continues from Murupara through Te Urewera to Lake Waikaremoana, a route that has long included unsealed sections. Forestry country like Kaingaroa and Rotoehu is permit-only, mainly for hunting and fishing.
Clubs. The NZFWDA-affiliated Eastern Bay Twin Diff Club is based at Otakiri and meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month at the Edgecumbe Cosmopolitan Club. Further afield, the Geyserland 4WD Club and Sulphur City 4Wheelers are in Rotorua, and the Bay of Plenty Four Wheel Drive Club meets in Tauranga.
Fitting your parts in Whakatāne
All Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY fitting. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights go on with hand tools, axle stands and a helper. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician — any of them can fit a bar or wire in lights. Lift kits are easiest on a hoist, and always book a wheel alignment after suspension work.
