4x4 Parts & Accessories in Whanganui
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Whanganui and the surrounding river and hill country: Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and LED driving lights. We don't have a shop on Victoria Avenue or anywhere else. Kren Bits is an online-only New Zealand store, so you order online, the parts come to you, and you either fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bullbars and lift kits for the utes common around Whanganui are bolt-on and come with the hardware you need to fit them.
4x4 parts delivered to Whanganui
Whanganui sits at the mouth of the Whanganui River on the South Taranaki Bight, where State Highways 3 and 4 meet. The city has about 42,000 people. Much of its economy depends on the surrounding farmland, and engineering firms and boat builders work around the port and Heads Road. Behind the city, the Whanganui River runs about 290km inland toward Tongariro. It's the longest navigable river in the country, and Whanganui National Park covers a big share of the district's hill country. That makes for steep sheep and beef country, long gravel side roads and plenty of river crossings. A Whanganui ute often spends the week between town, the farm and the coast.
Smaller parts go to Whanganui by courier and bullbars go by freight. Before anything is sent, tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number. The mistake we see most often is a kit or bar ordered for the wrong model year, and a quick check avoids it.

Bullbars for Whanganui drivers
Our bullbar range is built around Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed for New Zealand utes and wagons. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full bar replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights. It has mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and each bar is shaped for a specific model.
Rockarmor bars that suit the trucks you see around Whanganui:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MR
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
Fitting a bullbar takes two people, but the steps are simple. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any sensors are moved across. If you'd rather not do it at home, any Whanganui mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch for steep wet farm tracks and a set of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for dark back roads.
Lift kits for Whanganui 4x4s
A bar and winch add a lot of weight up front. If the truck also carries dogs, fencing gear or a loaded tray, the factory springs soon start to sag. That's why many Whanganui owners fit a lift kit at the same time. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 is our first pick for current utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load ratings for light daily use or constant towing and carrying. Popular kits:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79
Ultima 4x4 fills the gaps for older and less common vehicles, and there are plenty of those still working on Whanganui farms:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mazda Courier / B2600 1985–2006
A mechanic with a hoist can bolt in a lift kit, and you'll need a wheel alignment afterwards. The 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so talk to a certifier before you go further.
Popular 4x4s in Whanganui
The Toyota Hilux in every generation is the backbone of the Whanganui ute fleet. You'll see new N80s, plenty of N70s and older LN models still doing farm work. For the newer trucks, a Hilux bullbar and Hilux lift kit are the usual pair. The Ford Ranger is close behind, and the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar suits it.
The Mitsubishi Triton is a popular farm truck here. There's the Triton MQ bullbar and the Triton MR/MV lift kit. Isuzu D-Max owners can match the D-Max GT Hoop bar with suspension. The LandCruiser 70 and 200 Series both suit Whanganui's hill country, and the FJ80 rock sliders fit older 80 Series Cruisers. If you drive a Hilux Surf, look at the Surf 180 lift kit.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Whanganui
Whanganui River Road. The River Road runs about 64km from the State Highway 4 junction north of the city up to Pīpīriki, the gateway to Whanganui National Park. Along the way it passes Pungarehu, Parikino, Ātene, Koriniti, Matahiwi, Rānana and Hiruhārama (Jerusalem). It isn't a 4WD track, but it is narrow and winding, so drive slower than you would on the highway. Mobile coverage is patchy. The marae and urupā along the river are sacred, so get permission before visiting. In summer you'll also share the road with cyclists on the Mountains to Sea trail.
Castlecliff and Kai Iwi beaches. Castlecliff, the city's western beach suburb, and Kai Iwi further up the coast are where most Whanganui locals head for the sand. Beaches are treated as roads under the Land Transport Act, so road rules apply and police have said they'll act on complaints about speeding. Keep well clear of flagged swimming areas and surf events in summer.
Waitōtara Valley and the back country. The hill country north-west of Whanganui is the sort of terrain where private-land 4WD trips happen. The Manawatū 4WD Club's annual charity safari has covered about 200km of backcountry in and around the Waitōtara Valley. Farm and station access here is by landowner permission only, usually through a club event.
42 Traverse and the central plateau. Head up State Highway 4 and you reach the 42 Traverse in the Tongariro Forest. DOC opens it to 4WDs only from 1 December to 30 April, and a large landslip means vehicles can use each end but not the full 46km. Expect a rough track with unbridged stream crossings, and take recovery gear.
Clubs. The Wanganui 4WD Club is the local NZFWDA-affiliated club. According to its NZFWDA listing it meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the St Johns Club on Glasgow Street. The club has run "Give it a Go" days at its Turakina Valley Road venue, where visitors ride in the navigator seat over competition obstacles. Club members have also hosted rounds of the National 4x4 Trials at Rangiwahia.
Fitting your parts in Whanganui
Kren Bits parts are designed to be fitted at home. The bullbars and lift kits come with the hardware you need, and a confident home mechanic with a helper can do the job in a weekend. If you'd rather hand it over, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Whanganui. They can fit the bar, wire in lights or a winch, and install the suspension. Always book a wheel alignment after a lift kit goes in.

Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop can fit our kits. Take the kit to the workshop you already trust with your truck.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
The 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
