Toyota Hilux Rock Sliders Guide (N70, N80): Side Protection for Australian Touring

The sills on a Hilux are exposed. Drop a wheel into a rut on a washout, slide sideways off a bank, or ground out on a rocky climb and the factory sill gets folded — and once a Hilux sill is folded, you're either replacing panels or living with it forever. Proper rock sliders fix this before it happens.

This guide covers rock sliders for the N70 (2005-2015) and N80 (2015-2024) Hilux — what to look for, how to spec for Australian touring, and what to budget.

Steel vs alloy

Steel sliders

The default for real off-road use. 4-6mm plate with tube top rail. Will take a full body-weight hit against a rock without deforming. 40-60kg per side.

Alloy sliders

15-25kg per side, corrosion-resistant, fine for touring where you're not routinely dropping onto rocks. Bends under serious impact where steel would spring back.

Chassis-mount vs body-mount — this is the key decision

Body-mount sliders bolt to the body pinch-weld. Any serious hit transfers load into the body shell — and on a Hilux, that means cracked welds and deformed sills.

Chassis-mount sliders bolt directly to the chassis rails using the factory body-mount points. Takes the entire load straight into the chassis. The only option for genuine off-road use.

On the Hilux N80, chassis-mount sliders use the factory tie-down points and require no drilling — a "no-drill" install should be standard on any quality set. N70 chassis mounts are similar but require removing the plastic body-mount covers.

N70 vs N80 — not cross-compatible

The N70 (2005-2015) and N80 (2015-2024) share no sill or chassis geometry. A N70 slider will not fit an N80. Within the N80, pre-facelift (2015-2017), facelift (2018-2020), and Rogue (2020+) trims all share slider fitment.

Step vs no-step

Flat-topped sliders double as side steps — good for families with kids. Tube-top sliders look cleaner and give better ground clearance but require separate steps. Touring Hilux builds split roughly 60/40 flat-top versus tube-top.

Rocker panel protection

Quality sliders include a full rocker panel plate that extends up to protect the lower door skin. Cheap sliders stop at the pinch-weld and leave the lower door skin exposed to rocks, mud, and sandblasting.

Fitting notes

  • Chassis-mount install typically uses 4-6 bolts per side into existing body-mount points.
  • No-drill designs take 2-3 hours DIY with two people.
  • Rust-protect the underside with cavity wax before fitting — it's the one area that rusts first.
