Nissan Navara NP300 Lift Kit Guide (2015-2020): Coil Rear and the Sag Problem
Share
The Nissan Navara NP300 (D23, 2015-2020) is unique among Australian dual cabs in one key way: the rear is coil-sprung, not leaf. Nissan's 5-link coil rear was supposed to give ute-owners a more car-like ride. It did — but it also introduced a chronic sag problem that shows up the moment you load a canopy, tow anything, or fit a long-range tank.
This guide covers how to fix NP300 rear sag, how to spec a proper lift kit, and what to budget.
The NP300 sag problem — what's actually going on
Factory NP300 rear coils are rated for a light constant load (~150kg above kerb weight). Add a canopy (80-100kg) and drawers (40-60kg) and you're already at the coil rate limit. Add a 200kg tongue weight from a camper trailer and the rear sits 80-100mm below factory ride height.
Nissan issued a Technical Service Bulletin in 2018 acknowledging the issue and offering revised coils — but the TSB coils are a modest upgrade, not a true heavy-duty fix. Most NP300 owners running any real touring load fit aftermarket constant-load rear coils within the first 12 months of ownership.
Lift kit choices on the NP300
40-45mm (1.5-2 inch) lift
The default. Clears 32-inch tyres, restores factory ride height with a canopy and basic drawers, and keeps suspension geometry inside factory tolerance. Doesn't require engineering in any Australian state.
50mm (2-inch) lift
Legal, but right at the edge of factory geometry tolerance. Requires UCAs to keep castor and camber inside spec. Clears 33-inch tyres comfortably.
75mm (3-inch) lift
Serious territory. Engineering required in most states. Diff drop, UCAs, extended brake lines mandatory. Not common on NP300s — if you want a 3-inch lift, you're probably better served on a Hilux or Ranger platform.
NP300 suspension — coil front, coil rear
Front end (5-link coil IFS)
- Heavier coils matched to your constant front load (bullbar, winch, secondary battery).
- Shocks with longer stroke — foam-cell or twin-tube.
- UCAs for 50mm+ lifts.
Rear end (5-link coil)
- Constant-load-rated heavier coils (critical on NP300).
- Longer shocks matched to coil rates.
- Adjustable upper and lower trailing arms for 50mm+ lifts (to correct pinion angle).
Constant load rating — the NP300 specific bit
Because the rear is coil-sprung, the NP300 is more sensitive to load matching than leaf-sprung utes. A spring that's too soft sags immediately. A spring that's too firm rides like a cart with no load.
Calculate your constant rear load:
- Steel canopy: 80-100kg
- Drawer system: 40-60kg
- Fridge slide + fridge: 40kg
- Long-range tank (filled): 100kg
- Second battery + solar: 30kg
Typical NP300 touring constant rear load: 300-400kg. Spec coils rated for 300-400kg constant load.
Supporting mods on the NP300
- Extended rear brake lines (for 45mm+ lifts).
- Adjustable panhard rod (to keep rear axle centred).
- Adjustable upper trailing arms (for 50mm+ lifts).
- UCAs (for 50mm+ lifts).
- Wheel alignment post-install.
Tyre fitment
- Stock: 255/60R18 (~30 inch).
- 45mm lift: 265/70R17 or 285/70R17 (~32 inch).
- 50mm lift: 285/75R17 (~33 inch) with minor trim.
- 75mm lift: 33x12.5R17 with diff drop and UCAs.
What a good NP300 lift kit costs
- Basic 40mm kit: $1,190 - $1,590
- 45mm kit with foam-cell shocks + constant-load coils: $1,790 - $2,590
- Premium 45mm kit with remote-res shocks + UCAs + trailing arms: $3,390 - $4,690
- 75mm kit with engineering: $4,690 - $6,690
- Certified GVM upgrade: $3,800 - $5,800
Professional fitting: $1,000-$1,700 (more than leaf-rear utes because of the trailing-arm adjustment).
Three NP300-specific traps
- Under-rated rear coils. The single most common NP300 mistake. Spec your constant load.
- Skipping the adjustable panhard. On 45mm+ lifts, the rear axle will shift 10-15mm sideways without one.
- Mixing brands front and rear. Always buy a matched engineered package.
