Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories across Tairāwhiti Gisborne and the East Coast, from the city and the Poverty Bay flats up SH35 through Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Ruatōria, and inland along SH2 to Te Karaka and Matawai. We stock Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, winches, rock sliders and driving lights. Every bar and kit is bolt-on and supplied with its fitting hardware.

Towns we deliver to in the Gisborne region

Tairāwhiti is hill country, with farms, stations and forestry linked by a handful of highways and plenty of gravel back roads. Gisborne is the hub; SH35 heads north up the coast to East Cape, and SH2 runs inland towards Ōpōtiki and south towards Wairoa.

  • Gisborne: the region's city, home of the East Coast Four Wheel Drive Club and the start of the Motu Road and East Cape drives.

We also deliver to the smaller towns of the East Coast and inland:

  • Te Karaka: in the Waipaoa River valley on SH2, the biggest settlement between Gisborne and Ōpōtiki, with about 580 residents.
  • Tolaga Bay: about 45km north-east of Gisborne at the mouth of the Ūawa River, home to the second-longest wharf in New Zealand, built in the 1920s.
  • Tokomaru Bay: a small, sheltered bay about 91km north of Gisborne on SH35, near Mount Hikurangi.
  • Ruatōria: in the Waiapu Valley below where the Mata and Tapuaeroa rivers meet, about 128km from Gisborne by road and 3km off SH35, in the heart of the Ngāti Porou rohe.

Smaller parts travel by courier and bullbars go by freight, including to rural delivery addresses up the Coast. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent — on the East Coast, getting it right first time matters. Use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.

Bullbars for Gisborne region utes

Our bullbars come from Rockarmor, a steel range designed for the utes and wagons New Zealanders work. The GT Hoop is a full bumper replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a fit specific to each model. On rural roads and slip-prone back country, that front-end protection matters.

A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job: the factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the lights and sensors move across. If you'd rather not, any local mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for long nights on the Coast.

Lift kits for Gisborne region 4x4s

RAW 4x4 2-inch (about 50mm) kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options to match how you use the truck. Popular picks include the Hilux N80 kit, the LandCruiser 76/78/79 kit, the Hilux N70 kit and the Navara D40 kit.

Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, such as the Hilux LN105/106, the Navara D22 and the Mazda Courier / B2600.

Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.

4x4 tracks and clubs across the Gisborne region

East Cape and SH35. The coast road runs north from Gisborne past Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Ruatōria to Te Araroa, where the East Cape Road continues about 21km, partly on gravel, to the road end below New Zealand's easternmost lighthouse. Lighthouse access crosses private land and is currently closed to the public. Farm tracks along the coast are private, so ask before you drive.

Motu Road. From opposite the Matawai Hotel on SH2, the Motu Road winds about 48km to SH35 east of Ōpōtiki. It's a famous former Rally of New Zealand stage — narrow, winding, with steep drops and slips — and best driven in fine weather. Matawai has fuel.

Beaches. Gisborne District Council has been reviewing vehicle use on beaches, with its regulatory committee backing lower speed limits on Makorori and Kaiti beaches as a step towards removing cars from them altogether. Check the current rules before driving on any beach.

Forestry. Plantation forests are private and access is by permit from the forest owner. Summit Forests, for example, issues permits for its Gisborne forests, but pauses hunting permits during the fire season.

Clubs. The NZFWDA-affiliated East Coast Four Wheel Drive Club is based in Gisborne. In early 2025 it ran a four-day, 32-vehicle fundraising trek for the Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust from Gisborne through Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Tikitiki to Waipiro Bay, with landowners opening their farm gates for the cause. Joining the club is the best way to drive country you can't otherwise reach.

Fitting your parts

Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. They bolt to factory mounts and come with the hardware. Fit them at home with a helper, or take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Tairāwhiti. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.

Gisborne region 4x4 FAQs

Do you deliver up the East Coast?

Yes. We deliver to Gisborne and right up the Coast, including Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Ruatōria, Tikitiki and Te Araroa, and inland to Te Karaka and Matawai. Bullbars travel by freight and smaller parts by courier.

Do you have a store in Gisborne?

No. Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfronts. Order at krenbits.com or call 021 288 6816.

What's the most popular bullbar?

Across the whole store, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, along with the GT Hoop range for the Toyota Hilux.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

Yes. Our bars and kits bolt on and come with fitting hardware. A bullbar is a two-person job; a lift kit is easiest on a hoist, or take it to your local mechanic. Always get a wheel alignment afterwards.

Do lift kits need certification?

2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
