4x4 parts delivered to Gisborne

Gisborne is home to around 38,100 people and sits where the Waimata, Taruheru and Tūranganui rivers meet — the Tūranganui being, at 1.2km, the shortest river in New Zealand. Vineyards and farms spread across the Poverty Bay flats around the city, pastoral farming is one of the main industries, and ships load logs for export at the harbour. The city is sheltered by high country to the west, and the roads out are long ones: SH2 heads north-west to Ōpōtiki and south to Wairoa and Napier, while SH35 runs up the coast to East Cape.

That makes a 4x4 close to essential for a lot of Gisborne households. Station and farm utes run steep hill country and long gravel roads, forestry trucks share those roads with everyone else, and the storms of recent years, including Cyclone Gabrielle, left plenty of slips and washouts behind. A strong steel bar, a lift kit that carries a bar, a winch and a full tray, and good lights for long night drives are the upgrades that earn their keep here.

Orders to Gisborne travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars and other large items go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent — it saves a long wait for a swap if the first part doesn't fit.

Bullbars for Gisborne drivers

Our bullbar range is Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed for the trucks New Zealanders work. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement for the factory bumper in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights and mounting points for a winch and driving lights. Every bar is made for a specific model and bolts to that vehicle's own chassis mounts.

Rockarmor bullbars that suit East Coast farm and station utes:

Fitting a steel bullbar is a two-person job with ordinary tools. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it in the shed, any Gisborne mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. A Rockarmor 12,000lb winch is good insurance on slip-prone back roads, and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights make the long run up SH35 or over to Ōpōtiki at night a lot easier.

Lift kits for Gisborne 4x4s

A heavy bar and winch load the front, and a station ute with dogs, fencing gear or a trailer loads the rear. A lift kit brings back ride height and clearance and gives the springs real capacity for hill country. We stock two brands.

RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for trucks that run light or ones that carry and tow every day. Good matches for Tairāwhiti:

Ultima 4x4 covers the older trucks still working the Coast:

Lift kits bolt in but are best fitted by a mechanic with a hoist, and they always need a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.

Popular 4x4s in Gisborne and Tairāwhiti

The Toyota Hilux is the East Coast's farm ute. Newer N80s suit the Hilux GT Hoop bullbar, 2012–2015 trucks take the later N70 Hilux bar, and there are still plenty of LN-series utes on station tracks that suit the LN105/106 Ultima kit. The Ford Ranger is just as common in town and on the farm, and a Ranger bullbar is an easy first upgrade.

The Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton — the Triton MR bullbar suits current models — and the Navara D40 and D22 fill out the rest of the ute fleet. LandCruiser 70 Series utes are a common sight on the stations and suit the LandCruiser 70 lift kit, while the Prado and LandCruiser 200 do the towing — the Prado 150 lift kit is a popular match.

4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Gisborne

Gisborne beaches. Vehicles have long been driven on some Gisborne beaches, but the rules are under review. In 2022 the council's regulatory committee backed much lower speed limits on Makorori and Kaiti beaches as a step towards removing cars from those beaches altogether, and a 2023 hearing heard strong calls for a full ban at Makorori. Check Gisborne District Council's current rules before you take a vehicle onto the sand, keep off the dunes, and treat the beach as a road with people on it.

Motu Road. Leaving SH2 opposite the historic Matawai Hotel, the Motu Road winds roughly 48km through the hills to SH35 east of Ōpōtiki. It was one of the longest and toughest stages of the Rally of New Zealand, where Colin McRae won his first world championship rally in 1993. The road is narrow and winding with steep drops, and slips are common, so it's a fine-weather drive. Matawai has fuel, and the back-road route from Wairoa through Matawai to Ōpōtiki is mostly gravel.

SH35 and the East Cape. The coast road north passes Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Ruatōria on its way to Te Araroa. From there the East Cape Road runs about 21km, partly on gravel, to the road end below New Zealand's easternmost lighthouse. Access to the lighthouse itself crosses private land and it's currently closed to the public, so check before you go. The farm and station tracks you'll see along the way are private — ask before you drive.

Forestry. Logs are one of the city's big exports, and access to plantation forests is by permit from the forest owner. Summit Forests, for example, issues access permits for its Gisborne forests for activities such as hunting, walking and motorsport, but stops issuing hunting permits during the fire season. Never drive into a forest block without a permit, and expect logging trucks on forestry roads.

Clubs. The NZFWDA-affiliated East Coast Four Wheel Drive Club is based in Gisborne. In early 2025 the club ran a four-day fundraising trek for the Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust, with 32 vehicles leaving Awapuni Speedway and travelling through Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Tikitiki to Waipiro Bay. The club waited two years after Cyclone Gabrielle so landowners could repair storm damage, and organisers said farm gates opened once landowners heard who the trek was for — a good example of how club membership opens up country you can't otherwise drive.

Fitting your parts in Gisborne

Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY fitting. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights go on with hand tools, axle stands and a mate to help. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician — any of them can fit a bar or wire in a set of lights. Lift kits are easiest on a hoist, and always book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.

Do you have a store in Gisborne?

No — Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfronts. Order on the website or call 021 288 6816 and we'll help you pick the right part.

What's the most popular bullbar for East Coast utes?

Store-wide, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

Yes. Our bars and kits are bolt-on and come with fitting hardware. A bullbar is a two-person job with basic tools; a lift kit is more involved and easiest on a hoist. Get a wheel alignment afterwards.

Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Gisborne?

Fit it yourself, or take the kit to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop — any competent workshop can install it and arrange the alignment.

Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?

Our 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
