4x4 parts delivered to Nelson
Nelson is a working town as much as a sunny one. The urban area had 49,224 people at the 2023 census, and the economy it shares with Tasman rests on what locals call the big five: seafood, horticulture, forestry, farming and tourism. Port Nelson is described as the biggest fishing port in Australasia, and that means plenty of utes on the wharf, in the orchards and up the forestry roads behind the city. The hills come right down to Atawhai, Stoke and Tāhunanui, and a lot of Nelson driving is steep gravel, wet clay in winter and dust in a dry summer, so trucks here need to cope with all of it.
That's why Nelson owners usually start with front protection and suspension. A steel bullbar earns its place on a forestry block or a back-country run to the Rainbow, and a mild lift helps a loaded ute carry the extra weight of a bar, a winch and a full tray without sitting on its bump stops.
Smaller parts reach Nelson by courier, and bullbars travel by freight because of their size. Send us your vehicle details and we'll confirm the right part number before your order is packed. The usual mistake is a model-year mix-up, especially on utes that had a facelift halfway through a generation.

Bullbars for Nelson drivers
We build our bullbar range around Rockarmor, a steel bar brand made for the utes and wagons that New Zealanders actually drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper with a powder-coated steel bar that has hoops that protect the grille and headlights, plus mounting points for a winch and driving lights. Each bar is made for a specific model, not adapted from a universal bracket.
Rockarmor bars that suit the trucks you see around Nelson:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar: Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar: Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
Fitting a steel bar takes two people but isn't complicated. You take off the factory bumper, bolt the bar to the chassis mounts, then move the indicators and any parking sensors across. If you'd rather not do it in the driveway, any Nelson mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. To finish the front end, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and a pair of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. A winch is worth having on the steep, slippery climbs behind Nelson.
Lift kits for Nelson 4x4s
A bullbar and winch put real weight over the front axle, so plenty of Nelson owners lift the suspension at the same time. We carry two lift kit brands, each suited to different vehicles.
RAW 4x4 is our pick for modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit comes with front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and you can choose a load rating that matches how you use the truck, from mostly empty during the week to towing a boat every weekend. Good matches for Nelson vehicles:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Mazda BT-50 2020+
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit: Toyota Prado 150 2009–2023
Ultima 4x4 covers many of the older and less common 4x4s still working hard around Nelson, including these:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: Toyota Hilux Surf 180 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit: VW Amarok 2010–2024
A lift kit bolts in, but it's easiest for a mechanic with a hoist, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit them.
Popular 4x4s in Nelson
Look around Port Nelson, the Stoke industrial streets or a car park at a Maitai Valley trailhead and you'll see the same trucks again and again. The Toyota Hilux leads, and a Hilux bullbar for the N80 is a common first upgrade. Older N70 Hilux utes are still everywhere too, and they're covered by the GT Hoop for the 2012–2015 N70 and a RAW lift kit for the 2005–2011 N70.
The Ford Ranger is just as common on trade and orchard work. Owners usually pair a Ranger bullbar with a suspension upgrade. Isuzu D-Max owners can choose the D-Max GT Hoop or, for 2012–2017 trucks, a D-Max lift kit. For the Navara D40 there's a RAW Navara lift kit. LandCruiser 70 Series owners, often running hunting or high-country trucks, can lift with the RAW kit for the 76/78/79.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Nelson
Maungatapu Track. Nelson City Council describes this as a historic route between the Maitai Dam and the Pelorus Valley. It's a rough four-wheel-drive track used by utility providers and some recreational groups. There are two locked gates between the dam and the Maungatapu Saddle, and you need Council permission to take a motor vehicle through. You apply with the Council's Bluetooth Padlock Access Form, ticking both "Maungatapu Top" and "Maungatapu Bottom", and approved users open the padlocks through the LockVue app. Allow up to three working days. Access is limited, so not every request is approved. For questions, call the Council's Customer Services Centre on 03 546 0200.
Forestry behind the city. Much of the pine country around Nelson is managed by Tasman Pine Forests. Its forest access rules say Central Road (via the Maitai Valley) and Sharlands Road in Hira Forest are closed to public motor vehicles, though permitted vehicles can use them. In Waimea Forest, Ben Nevis Road has a public easement that allows motor vehicles in daylight hours. Forests can close at short notice for fire risk, weather or harvesting, so check the forest manager's access page before you go.
Rainbow Road via St Arnaud. Further south, the Rainbow Road runs 112km from St Arnaud to Hanmer Springs over private Rainbow Station land. DOC says it's suitable only for high-clearance 4WD vehicles and that it's a toll road. Rainbow Station says that during its seasonal access period the gates open from 7am to 7pm. The route crosses Island Saddle at 1,347m, which DOC describes as the highest publicly accessible road in New Zealand. There's no cell coverage, and snow, slips or fire risk can close the road without notice.
West Coast weekends. Nelson drivers don't have to stay local. A Nelson 4 Wheel Drive Club trip written up in NZ4WD magazine headed down the Buller to Westport and drove the Denniston Plateau, Charleston Beach, the Mackley track and the Mount Frederick track.
Clubs. The Nelson 4 Wheel Drive Club is the NZFWDA-affiliated club for the area. Its listing says it meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Ocean Lodge, Tāhunanui, with no meeting in January. Joining a club is the easiest way to get onto permit-only and private-land tracks with people who know them.
Fitting your parts in Nelson
Every Kren Bits part is designed for DIY fitting. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights come with their mounting hardware, and most bolt to existing factory mounting points. If you have a level driveway, a decent socket set and a mate to help lift the bar, you can usually do a bullbar in an afternoon.
If you'd rather hand it over, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician. Auto-electricians are the right call for winch wiring and driving-light looms. Whoever does the work, book a wheel alignment after any suspension change, and recheck the bolts after the first few hundred kilometres.
