Towns we deliver to in Nelson

Nelson City covers only about 422 square kilometres, but it had 52,584 people at the 2023 census. It's a unitary authority, so Nelson City Council does the jobs a regional council would do elsewhere. Port Nelson, jointly owned with Tasman, is described as the biggest fishing port in Australasia and is the sea gateway for Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. Behind the city, plantation forest and steep back-country routes such as the Maungatapu, which crosses to the Pelorus Valley, start only minutes from town.

  • Nelson: the city itself, from Nelson Central and The Wood to Stoke, Tāhunanui and Atawhai, with the Maitai Valley on its doorstep.

We also deliver to the rest of the region's suburbs and rural localities:

  • Stoke and Tāhunanui: suburbs on the Richmond side of the city, with Richmond itself about 15km south-west of Nelson.
  • Atawhai, Wakapuaka and Whangamoa: the city's northern suburbs and the rural localities beyond them, including Glenduan and Todds Valley.
  • Hira and Cable Bay: rural localities within Nelson City, with the pine of Hira Forest on the hills.
  • Maitai and The Brook: valley suburbs close to the Maitai River, which runs through the city and up to the Maitai Dam, the start of the Maungatapu route.

Heading south-west? Richmond and the wider Tasman District have their own pages: see Richmond and all Tasman 4x4 locations, including Motueka, Golden Bay, Wakefield, Brightwater and Māpua.

Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars travel by freight, including to rural addresses. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent. Use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.

Bullbars for Nelson utes

Our bullbars are made by Rockarmor, a steel range designed for the utes and wagons New Zealanders drive. The GT Hoop is a full bumper replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a fit made for each model. On a port ute or a truck that spends weekends on forestry roads, it's front-end protection that earns its keep.

A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job: the factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the lights and sensors move across. If you'd rather not, any local mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights to complete the front end.

Lift kits for Nelson 4x4s

RAW 4x4 2-inch (about 50mm) kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options to match how you use the truck. Popular picks include the Hilux N80 kit, the D-Max 2012–2017 kit, the Navara D40 kit and the Prado 150 kit.

Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, such as the Hilux LN110/160/170, the FJ Cruiser and the Pajero V7#.

Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.

4x4 tracks and clubs across Nelson

Maungatapu. The historic Maungatapu Track runs from the Maitai Dam over to the Pelorus Valley, and Nelson City Council describes it as a rough four-wheel-drive track. It's open to 4WDs, motorbikes, walkers and cyclists, but motor vehicles need Council permission to get through the two locked gates between the dam and the Maungatapu Saddle. Apply through the Council's Bluetooth Padlock Access Form, select both the top and bottom gates, and give it up to three working days. Numbers are limited, so not every application is approved.

Plantation forests. The pine on the hills behind the city is working forest. Tasman Pine Forests' rules say a permit is needed to enter any of its forest land, forests can close at any time for operations or hazardous conditions, and you shouldn't go in during high winds or rain. OneFortyOne, which manages forests across the top of the south, likewise requires permits for most access and bans night-time entry, though it lists Collins Valley in Rai Forest as a picnic area open without one.

Weekend runs south. Nelson is well placed for the big back-country drives. The Rainbow Road starts at St Arnaud, and DOC's Molesworth brochure lists it as 112km and 4WD only past Lake Tennyson, with Rainbow Station's permission required and a toll from 26 December to 1 May. Further east, the Acheron Road through Molesworth runs 207km from Blenheim to Hanmer Springs from 1 October until Easter Monday or the second Monday in April, whichever is later.

The West Coast. The Buller Gorge puts Westport about 222km from Nelson, and the Nelson club has run weekend trips there, taking in tracks around Charleston and the Denniston Plateau. See our West Coast 4x4 locations for more.

Clubs. The Nelson 4 Wheel Drive Club is the region's NZFWDA-affiliated club. Its listing says it meets at the Ocean Lodge, Tāhunanui, at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month, with no meeting in January.

Fitting your parts

Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. They bolt to factory mounts and come with the hardware, so you can fit them at home with a helper or take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Nelson. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
