4x4 Parts & Accessories in New Plymouth
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to New Plymouth and the rest of Taranaki, including Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We don't have a New Plymouth shop. Kren Bits is an online New Zealand store: you order on the website, the parts are sent to your door, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bullbars and lift kits are bolt-on, supplied with fitting hardware, and chosen for the utes that work Taranaki's dairy farms, oil and gas sites and back roads.
4x4 parts delivered to New Plymouth
New Plymouth is the main city of Taranaki, with around 60,000 people in its urban area and about 90,000 across the district, roughly two-thirds of the region's population. It sits on the west coast facing the Tasman Sea, with Taranaki Maunga rising behind it. The city is the service centre for intensive dairy farming and for oil, natural gas and petrochemical production, and Port Taranaki is the only deep-water port on the west coast of New Zealand.
That economy runs on utes. Farm trucks cover the ring plain every day, contractors and energy sector crews drive out to well sites and plants, and at the weekend the same vehicles tow boats to the coast or head inland on the long roads east of the mountain. Protection and suspension are what get used hardest: a bullbar for stock, gravel and the odd possum on a dark road, and a lift kit to handle the weight of a bar, a winch and a loaded deck.
We deliver across New Plymouth, including Bell Block, Fitzroy and Merrilands, plus Ōakura, Waitara, Inglewood and rural addresses around the city. Smaller parts travel by courier and bullbars go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before it's sent, so you don't end up with a bar for the wrong model year.

Bullbars for New Plymouth drivers
Our bullbar range is built around Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed for the vehicles New Zealanders actually drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement for the factory bumper in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each specific model.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit the utes common around New Plymouth:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
A steel bar is a two-person job but not a complicated one. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors are moved across. If you'd rather not do it at home, any New Plymouth mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Complete the front end with a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights, which earn their keep on unlit rural roads around the mountain.
Lift kits for New Plymouth 4x4s
A bullbar and winch put real weight over the front springs, and a ute that carries gear every day sits lower at the back. Lifting the suspension at the same time brings back the ride height and load capacity. We stock two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 kits are the pick for modern utes. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options so you can match the kit to the job, from a mostly empty commuter to a work truck that's loaded all week. Popular kits for New Plymouth vehicles:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Ultima 4x4 kits cover the older farm trucks still working around Taranaki:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mazda Courier/B2600 1985–2006
Lift kits bolt in, but they're a job for a hoist, and every one needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
Popular 4x4s in New Plymouth and Taranaki
The Toyota Hilux is the classic Taranaki farm ute, and a Hilux bullbar with a Hilux lift kit is the standard combination for the N80. For earlier trucks there's the GT Hoop for the Hilux N70 2012–2015. The Ford Ranger is just as common in New Plymouth, and the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar suits the generation you'll see most on the road.
Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara utes are all popular with contractors, and we carry the Triton MR bullbar and the D-Max 2012–2017 lift kit alongside the bars above. The LandCruiser 70 series is a regular on farms, and the Prado is a common family wagon for trips around the mountain, with a Prado 150 bullbar and Prado lift kit to match.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around New Plymouth
Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki. Egmont National Park was renamed Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki on 1 April 2025, after Parliament recognised the 2,518m mountain as a legal person, Taranaki Maunga. Vehicles reach the park on three roads: Egmont Road to North Egmont, Pembroke Road to Stratford Plateau and Manaia Road to Dawson Falls. The park has no off-road vehicle network, so keep to the roads, and note that dogs aren't allowed. Weather on the mountain changes fast, so treat the road ends as the start of a walk, not a drive.
The Forgotten World Highway (SH43). From Stratford, State Highway 43 runs 148km east to Taumarunui over the Strathmore, Whangamōmona and Tahora saddles, through the Moki Tunnel and the Tangarakau Gorge. Its 12km gravel section through the gorge was sealed in early 2025, but the road is still very narrow in places and takes up to three hours, so it's best done in daylight with fuel and supplies on board. Whangamōmona, the self-declared republic, makes a good stop on the way.
Back roads east of the mountain. The newtracs trail map lists 67 4WD trails in Taranaki, and most are unsealed or unformed roads rather than purpose-built tracks. Many are in Stratford District, including several sections of Waitara Valley Road, Rimuputa Road and Mangaowata Road, with Mangare Road and Translator Road in New Plymouth District. Unformed roads often run through private farmland, so keep to the road line, leave gates as you find them, and turn back if a river valley track is flooding.
Private farm trips. The best off-road country in Taranaki is on private land, so organised events are the way in. One example: in 2017 the Okato Lions Club ran a 4WD trip across farmland among the conical hills of the ring plain near the Stony River, on the edge of the national park. Check local notices for events like this rather than heading onto a farm track uninvited.
Clubs. Taranaki has two clubs affiliated with the NZ Four Wheel Drive Association. The Mt Egmont 4Wheel Drive Club has a New Plymouth postal address and meets at the Inglewood Club on Moa Street, and the Taranaki Family 4x4 Club meets at members' homes, alternating between North and South Taranaki, so contact its secretary through the NZFWDA club directory. Joining a club is the simplest way to get onto private land and learn recovery skills from people who know the local country.
Fitting your parts in New Plymouth
Every part we sell is designed for DIY fitting with ordinary hand tools, and each bullbar and lift kit comes with its fitting hardware. If you'd rather not do it yourself, take the parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician. Fitting a bar and wiring in lights or a winch is everyday work for them. After any suspension job, book a wheel alignment before the vehicle goes back on the road.
New Plymouth 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to New Plymouth?
Yes. We deliver across New Plymouth, including Bell Block, Fitzroy and Merrilands, as well as Ōakura, Waitara, Inglewood, Stratford and rural Taranaki. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars travel by freight.
Do you have a store in New Plymouth?
No. Kren Bits is online only, with no shopfront in New Plymouth or anywhere else. Order online or call us on 021 288 6816 for help choosing the right part.
What's the most popular bullbar for Taranaki utes?
Across the whole store, the best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes, if you're handy with tools. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on. A lift kit needs spring compressors and a hoist or good stands, and an alignment afterwards, so many owners have a workshop handle that part.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in New Plymouth?
Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop can fit our kits. Have the kit delivered to you, then book it in with the mechanic you already trust.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
