4x4 Parts & Accessories in Oamaru
Kren Bits sends 4x4 parts and accessories to Oamaru and the rest of North Otago, including Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. Kren Bits is a New Zealand online store with no shop in Oamaru. You order on the website, we send the parts to you, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. The bullbars and lift kits we stock for the utes common in the Waitaki bolt on and come with fitting hardware, so a capable home mechanic or any local workshop can install them.
4x4 parts delivered to Oamaru
Oamaru is the largest town in North Otago and the seat of the Waitaki District, with about 14,300 people. It sits on the coast on State Highway 1, about 120km north of Dunedin and 80km south of Timaru. Most of the district is farmland, and the Alliance meat works at Pukeuri, just north of town, shows how much of the local economy depends on livestock. Inland, SH83 runs up the Waitaki Valley through Duntroon and Kurow to the hydro lakes and Omarama.
That makes North Otago ute country. A typical Oamaru 4x4 does farm work around Weston, Maheno and Ngapara, runs up the valley to the lakes, and sometimes heads over Danseys Pass into the Maniototo. A bullbar handles stock and gravel, and a lift kit lets the ute carry a bar, a winch and a full tray without sagging.
Orders to Oamaru go by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars travel by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent. Getting the model year right is the most important part.

Bullbars for Oamaru drivers
Our bullbars are mostly Rockarmor, a steel bar brand built around the utes and wagons Kiwis drive. The GT Hoop is a full replacement bar in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each specific model. If you drive the Waitaki back roads at dawn and dusk, that coverage matters.
Rockarmor bars that suit North Otago utes:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar, Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
Fitting a steel bullbar needs two people but is straightforward. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it yourself, any Oamaru mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. For a complete setup, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for long dark stretches of valley road.
Lift kits for Oamaru 4x4s
A bar and winch add weight over the front, so many North Otago owners sort the suspension at the same time. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 kits are our recommendation for modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and you choose a load rating to match how the ute works. A ute carrying fencing gear every day needs a different rating from one that mostly goes to town. Popular picks:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79
Ultima 4x4 kits cover many of the older and less common 4x4s still working on North Otago farms:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Hilux LN105/106 1989–1997
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Toyota FJ Cruiser 2006–2010
A lift kit bolts in, but it's best done by a mechanic with a hoist, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. Kits around 2 inches are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
Popular 4x4s in Oamaru and North Otago
The Toyota Hilux, old and new, is a staple on Waitaki farms, which makes the Hilux bullbar and Hilux lift kit obvious places to start. The Ford Ranger is just as common for work and towing, and the Ranger GT Hoop suits the PX2/PX3. Isuzu D-Maxes and Mitsubishi Tritons are popular diesel workhorses, and the D-Max lift kit suits the 2012–2017 model. The Nissan Navara D40 is a common used ute that pairs well with the Premium bar.
LandCruiser 70 Series utes and LandCruiser 200 wagons suit high-country and towing work, and older LN Hilux utes and D22 Navaras are still common as farm hacks.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Oamaru
Danseys Pass. This is North Otago's best-known back road. It crosses the Kakanui Range at 935m between Duntroon in the Waitaki Valley and Naseby and Ranfurly in the Maniototo, along the boundary between the Waitaki and Central Otago districts. Most of it is unsealed, and parts are cut straight into schist. The pass is named after William Dansey, who leased the Otekaike run from 1857 to 1871. It's a public road rather than a 4WD track, but loose gravel and long drops make it a good place for a ute with decent tyres and suspension.
Mount Kyeburn 4WD track (Oteake Conservation Park). DOC's advanced track runs from Buster Diggings along the ridge below Mount Kyeburn and drops steeply down to Danseys Pass Road. DOC describes the ridge as narrow and exposed and recommends it for experienced 4WD drivers only. It also warns of an active slip in the Timber Creek Conservation Area that makes vehicle access difficult, so check conditions first.
Oteake from the Waitaki Valley. Oteake Conservation Park covers big areas of the Hawkdun, Ida, St Bathans and St Marys ranges, and one of its access roads is Broken Hut Road from the Waitaki Valley. DOC's East Manuherikia and West Manuherikia tracks climb over saddles above 1,250m. The designated 4WD tracks are open only from Labour Weekend to 30 April. Expect river crossings, alpine weather at any time of year, and closures when tracks are prone to damage.
Clubs. The North Otago Four Wheel Drive Club is Oamaru's NZFWDA-affiliated club. The association lists its meeting room upstairs at the Brydone Hotel on Thames Street. A club trip is the best way to reach tracks that cross private station land, where much of the public access runs along easements and gates must be left as you find them.
Fitting your parts in Oamaru
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, sliders, lights and lift kits come with fitting hardware, and most are a weekend job for a capable owner with a helper. If you'd rather not do it yourself, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Oamaru or elsewhere in the Waitaki. Auto-electricians handle winch and light wiring. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
Oamaru 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Oamaru?
Yes. We deliver to Oamaru and across North Otago, including Weston, Kakanui, Maheno, Hampden, Palmerston, Duntroon, Kurow, Otematata and Omarama. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight.
Do you have a store in Oamaru?
No. Kren Bits is online only. Order at krenbits.com or call 021 288 6816 for advice.
What's the most popular bullbar for North Otago utes?
Across the store, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux. All of them suit the utes common around the Waitaki.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes, if you're handy. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. A lift kit is easier with a hoist and always needs an alignment afterwards.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Oamaru?
Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop in Oamaru can fit a RAW 4x4 or Ultima 4x4 kit. Ask them to book the alignment as part of the job.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
