4x4 Parts & Accessories in Otago
Kren Bits sends 4x4 parts and accessories all over Otago, including Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. Otago covers more than 31,000 square kilometres, from Dunedin's harbour hills to the Waitaki Valley, the Maniototo, Central Otago's orchards and the southern lakes. Kren Bits is a New Zealand online store with no shopfronts in the region. You order online, we send the parts to you, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bars and kits bolt on and come with fitting hardware.

Bullbars for Otago utes
Our bullbars are mostly Rockarmor, a powder-coated steel bar range made for the vehicles New Zealanders drive. The GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper and has hoops that protect the grille and headlights, plus mounts for a winch and driving lights. Bars that suit common Otago utes and wagons:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar, Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
For back-country trips, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. DOC advises carrying a winch or other recovery gear in Te Papanui.
Lift kits for Otago 4x4s
RAW 4x4 2-inch kits come with coils, leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for modern utes. Examples include the Hilux N80, Triton MR/MV, LandCruiser 76/78/79 and Prado 150 kits. Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common vehicles, such as the Hilux LN110/160/170, Hilux Surf 180 and VW Amarok.
Kits around 2 inches are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier. Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards.
4x4 tracks and clubs across Otago
Central Otago back-country roads. The Central Otago District Council keeps a list of back-country roads that are only suitable for 4WD vehicles, including Old Dunstan Road, Nevis Road, Lake Onslow Road, Mount Buster Road, Serpentine Road and Long Valley Ridge Road. Most close from the Tuesday after King's Birthday weekend and aren't maintained in winter. The back-country section of Old Dunstan Road reopens on 30 October.
Te Papanui and the Rock and Pillar Range. Te Papanui Conservation Park is reached from Old Dunstan Road at Clarks Junction. It protects tussock grassland and about 60% of Dunedin's water catchment, and its gate is locked over winter. DOC's Rock and Pillar Ridge Road follows the range tops to Summit Rock at 1,450m.
Oteake Conservation Park and Danseys Pass. Oteake covers the Hawkdun, Ida, St Bathans and St Marys ranges. Its designated 4WD tracks open from Labour Weekend to 30 April. Danseys Pass crosses the Kakanui Range at 935m between Duntroon and Naseby, and DOC's advanced Mount Kyeburn track drops down to the pass road.
Dunedin beaches. Driving on Dunedin beaches isn't permitted except to launch or retrieve a boat or in an emergency.
Clubs. The NZ Four Wheel Drive Association lists these affiliated Otago clubs: the Otago Recreational 4WD Group, the Landrover Owners Club (Otago) and the Land Rover Enthusiasts Club (Otago) around Dunedin; the North Otago Four Wheel Drive Club in Oamaru; the Central Otago Four Wheel Drive Club in Alexandra; the Clutha 4WD Club in Balclutha; and the Shotover 4WD Club in Queenstown. Much back-country access crosses private land, so a club is the best way in.
Fitting your parts
Everything we sell is designed for DIY and comes with fitting hardware. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. If you'd rather not fit parts yourself, take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Otago. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
