4x4 Parts & Accessories in Dunedin
Kren Bits sends 4x4 parts and accessories to Dunedin and the rest of coastal Otago, including Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We don't have a shop in Dunedin. Kren Bits is a New Zealand online store, so you order on the website, the parts come to your door, and you either fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. The bullbars and lift kits we stock for the utes and wagons you see around Otago bolt on and come with fitting hardware, so a capable home mechanic or any local workshop can install them.
4x4 parts delivered to Dunedin
Dunedin doesn't drive like a flat city. Around 104,000 people live in the urban area, inside a ring of old volcanic hills that includes Mount Cargill, Flagstaff and Saddle Hill. Baldwin Street in North East Valley is often called the world's steepest residential street. Beyond the hills the city boundary takes in the Otago Peninsula, Port Chalmers and its container port, and a long stretch of farmland, so plenty of Dunedin vehicles do a mix of steep suburban streets, harbour roads and gravel. Tradies, farmers on the city fringe and anyone who heads inland at weekends tend to need the same things: a strong front end for stock, deer and the odd bank, and suspension that can carry the extra weight without the nose dropping.
Orders to Dunedin go by courier through our New Zealand network, and bulky items like bullbars go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent. The usual mistake is a bar or kit ordered for the wrong model year or the wrong cab and tray setup, and it's easier to fix that before dispatch than after.
If you're not sure what fits, use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.
Bullbars for Dunedin drivers
Our bullbars are mostly Rockarmor, a steel bar range built around the utes and wagons New Zealanders actually own. The GT Hoop is a full replacement bar in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each model rather than one universal kit. On a wet hill road or a frosty inland morning that coverage is the reason to fit one.
Rockarmor bars that suit common Dunedin vehicles:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar, Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar, Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
Fitting a steel bullbar needs two people but isn't difficult. You take the factory bumper off, bolt the bar to the chassis mounts, and move the indicators and any parking sensors across. If you'd rather not do it in the garage, any Dunedin mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. To finish the front end, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope and a pair of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights. The lights help on dark rural roads, and the winch is worth having in the back country, where DOC's own advice for Te Papanui is to carry recovery gear.
Lift kits for Dunedin 4x4s
A steel bar and a winch put a lot of weight over the front axle, so Dunedin owners often do the suspension at the same time. We stock two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 kits are what we recommend for most modern utes. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and you choose a load rating to suit how the vehicle is used. A ute that's empty all week needs a different rating from one that tows a boat trailer down to the harbour every weekend. Good options for Dunedin:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Prado 150 2009–2023
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit, Mazda BT-50 2020+
Ultima 4x4 kits cover many older and less common 4x4s that are still on the road around Otago:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Toyota Hilux Surf 180 / 4Runner 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Mitsubishi Pajero V7# 2000+
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit, Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
A lift kit bolts in, but it's a job for a mechanic with a hoist, and the vehicle needs a wheel alignment afterwards. Kits around 2 inches are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
Popular 4x4s in Dunedin and coastal Otago
As in most of the country, the Hilux bullbar and the Hilux lift kit are where many Dunedin builds begin. The Ford Ranger is common as both a work ute and a family vehicle, and the Ranger PX2/PX3 GT Hoop is the bar that suits it. The Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton are popular with tradies who want a reliable diesel, and the Nissan Navara D40 is a good-value used buy that pairs well with the Premium bar.
Wagons suit Dunedin too, because the same vehicle does the school run on the hills and tows into the high country. The Toyota Prado 150 handles both, and older Hilux Surfs and Pajeros are still common for weekend trips. If you run a LandCruiser 70 Series, the RAW 4x4 LandCruiser 76/78/79 lift kit is the one to look at.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Dunedin
Te Papanui Conservation Park (Lammermoor Range). This is Dunedin's nearest serious high-country drive, about an hour from the city. DOC says the main route is to take SH87 from Outram, turn onto Old Dunstan Road at Clarks Junction, and reach the park entrance about 5km past Rocklands Station. Beyond the gate, 4WD is recommended. A 4WD road runs between the Old Dunstan Road entrance and Gardiners Track, and DOC warns that vehicles leaving the marked track have got stuck, so take a winch or other recovery gear. The park protects intact tussock grassland and roughly 60% of Dunedin's water catchment. The gate is locked over winter, roughly from early June to late October depending on conditions, and the road also closes when fire danger is extreme.
Old Dunstan Road. This was the 1860s gold rush route from Dunedin to the Dunstan (Clyde) diggings. It runs from Clarks Junction past Paerau to Moa Creek and climbs to almost 1,000m. Much of it is suitable only for 4WD vehicles. The Central Otago District Council lists the back-country section as closed from the Tuesday after King's Birthday weekend until 30 October, and says the road isn't maintained in winter.
Rock and Pillar Ridge Road. DOC's 4WD track along the Rock and Pillar Range starts 300m north of the McPhees Creek ford on Old Dunstan Road, climbs to McPhees Rock and follows the tops to Summit Rock at 1,450m. Vehicles must keep to the road. DOC warns the range is freezing and snow-covered in winter and advises avalanche caution in winter and spring.
Beaches. Dunedin's beaches are off limits to vehicles. The city council says driving or parking on Dunedin beaches isn't permitted except to launch or retrieve a boat or in an emergency, and offenders can be prosecuted under the Reserves Act. Vehicles also have to stay on formed accessways and carparks in council reserves.
Clubs. Dunedin has several clubs affiliated to the NZ Four Wheel Drive Association. The Otago Recreational 4WD Group is based in Dunedin. The Landrover Owners Club (Otago) meets monthly in Dunedin, has run trips to Maungatua and drives on its own land at Waitati. The Land Rover Enthusiasts Club (Otago) has run trips through Te Papanui, meeting at Outram. A club trip is the best way to learn tracks that cross private land or need a key.
Fitting your parts in Dunedin
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders, driving lights and lift kits all come with fitting hardware, and most are a weekend job for someone with good tools and a second pair of hands. If you'd rather not do it yourself, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Dunedin. Auto-electricians are a good choice for winch and light wiring. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment.
Dunedin 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Dunedin?
Yes. We deliver across Dunedin city, the Otago Peninsula, Port Chalmers, Mosgiel, Brighton, Waikouaiti and the rest of coastal Otago. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars go by freight.
Do you have a store in Dunedin?
No. Kren Bits is online only and has no shopfronts. Order at krenbits.com, or call 021 288 6816 if you'd like to talk it through first.
What's the most popular bullbar for Otago utes?
Across the store, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux. All of them suit the utes that are common around Dunedin.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
Yes, if you're comfortable with the tools. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job. A lift kit is easier with a hoist and spring compressors, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Dunedin?
Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop in Dunedin can fit a RAW 4x4 or Ultima 4x4 kit. Ask them to book the alignment for the same visit.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
