4x4 Parts & Accessories in Wānaka

Kren Bits sends 4x4 parts and accessories to Wānaka and the Upper Clutha: Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. There's no Kren Bits shop in Wānaka, or anywhere else. We're a New Zealand online store, so you choose your parts on the website, we get them to your address, and you bolt them on at home or hand them to your local mechanic. Everything we carry for Upper Clutha utes and wagons is a bolt-on part that ships with its fitting hardware, so a handy owner or any local workshop can do the install.

4x4 parts delivered to Wānaka

Wānaka is a town of roughly 13,000 people on Lake Wānaka, and it runs on the outdoors. In winter it is the main place to stay for the Cardrona and Treble Cone ski fields, with the busiest weeks from July to September. In summer the same vehicles are towing boats to the lake, carrying bikes and packs to the Matukituki Valley, and heading up gravel station roads. Add the sheep and dairy country of the Upper Clutha and the regular trip over the Crown Range to Queenstown, about 120km away, and you get a town where the vehicle in the driveway is usually a ute or a four-wheel-drive wagon.

Smaller orders reach Wānaka by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars travel by freight. Give us your make, model and year and we'll confirm the right part number before the order is sent.

To check fitment yourself, use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com. Or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816 and we'll talk it through.

Bullbars for Wānaka drivers

The core of our bullbar range is Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed around the vehicles Kiwis buy. A Rockarmor GT Hoop is a complete bar that takes the place of the factory bumper. It is powder-coated steel, it has hoops that protect the grille and headlights, it carries mounts for a winch and driving lights, and each bar is made for one model rather than adapted from a generic bracket.

Rockarmor bars that suit the utes and wagons you see around Wānaka:

Putting a steel bar on is a job for two people, not a specialist. The original bumper is unbolted, the bar goes onto the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors are moved over. If you don't want to do it in your own shed, your local mechanic or auto-electrician in Wānaka can fit it for you. To finish the front end, add the Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and a set of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for the dark winter drives to and from the ski fields.

Lift kits for Wānaka 4x4s

Once a bar, winch and recovery kit are on, the front springs are carrying a lot more than the factory planned for, and the fords on the way to Raspberry Creek reward every bit of ground clearance. We sell two lift kit brands.

RAW 4x4 is the kit we recommend for most late-model utes. Every 2-inch (roughly 50mm) RAW kit comes with front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and you choose a load rating that matches the way the vehicle works, whether it is a lightly loaded weekday commuter or a ute that tows a boat every weekend. Good matches for Wānaka vehicles:

Ultima 4x4 fills in the older and less common four-wheel drives:

A lift kit bolts in, but it is far easier for a mechanic with a hoist, and the vehicle needs a wheel alignment once it is done. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. A bigger lift, a body lift or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you order.

Popular 4x4s in Wānaka and the Upper Clutha

Hilux and Ranger utes are common around the lake. Hilux N80 owners can set up the front with a Hilux bullbar and a matching Hilux lift kit, and the newest trucks can take the widebody Hilux bullbar. For Ford, there's the Next Gen Ranger bullbar and, for the previous model, the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar.

Isuzu and Mitsubishi utes are common too. The D-Max bullbar covers 2020–2024 trucks, and earlier ones can take the D-Max lift kit. Triton owners have the Triton MQ bullbar and the Triton lift kit. For family wagons and ski-season runabouts, the Prado bullbar and Prado lift kit both suit the 150 Series, and the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit suits the working Cruisers on the stations.

4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Wānaka

Matukituki Valley and the Mount Aspiring Road. The Matukituki Valley is the main way into Mount Aspiring National Park from Wānaka. The road west from town is sealed as far as the Treble Cone access road, then it is gravel all the way to the park. DOC puts the Raspberry Creek car park 54km from town, with the last 30km on gravel and several creek fords in the final 10km. It runs through sheep country, so expect stock on the road. After heavy rain the creeks can rise until they can't be crossed in a 2WD and sometimes not in a 4WD, and washouts can close the road for repairs. Check DOC's latest road update before you go, and if a ford looks deep, get out and check it on foot first.

Cardrona Valley and the Pisa Range. The Pisa Conservation Area sits on the range above the Cardrona Valley. From the Tuohys Gully car park, off the lower Waiorau Snow Farm road about 22km from Wānaka, a 4WD track climbs to Tuohys Saddle at 1,140m, and a 4WD road runs on to Deep Creek Hut. The Snow Farm access road charges a fee to use it. DOC allows motorised vehicle access in the conservation area from 1 November to 1 April, and it may open later or close earlier in bad conditions. You need landowner permission at both the entry and exit points beforehand, the permit has to be carried, and drivers must stay on the main tracks and clean the vehicle before the trip to stop weeds spreading.

Lake Hāwea and the Hāwea Conservation Park. The Hāwea Conservation Park covers more than 105,000 hectares of mountain country around the lake. On the western side, the Hunter Valley 4WD route runs through private farmland from Kidds Bush to Scrubby Flat Creek. You need permission from Hunter Valley Station, applied for online at least two days ahead. The road is closed for lambing from 1 October to 1 December, and DOC says the drive to the park boundary takes at least four hours, with 22 gates to leave as you find them, blind corners, and a closed bridge at Little Hopwood Burn that needs a detour. On the eastern shore, a private 4WD road from the Dingle Burn car park leads above the lake towards Silver Island Bay.

Clubs. The NZ Four Wheel Drive Association doesn't list an affiliated club based in Wānaka. The closest affiliated clubs are the Central Otago Four Wheel Drive Club in Alexandra and the Shotover 4WD Club over the hill in Queenstown. DOC notes the land around the Pisa Range is working high country station land, so a club is often the easiest way onto private and permit-only tracks.

Fitting your parts in Wānaka

Kren Bits parts are made for DIY. Each bullbar and lift kit comes with its hardware, and most bars bolt to the factory mounting points. If you'd rather not do it yourself, take the parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Wānaka, Albert Town or Hāwea. Whatever you fit, book a wheel alignment after suspension work.

Wānaka 4x4 FAQs

Do you deliver to Wānaka?

Yes. We send parts to Wānaka and the surrounding Upper Clutha, including Albert Town, Lake Hāwea, Glendhu Bay and the Cardrona Valley, as well as rural addresses. Smaller parts come by courier and bullbars come by freight.

Do you have a store in Wānaka?

No. Kren Bits only sells online, and we don't have a shop in Wānaka or any other town. Order on the website, or call 021 288 6816 if you want us to check fitment first.

What's the most popular bullbar for Wānaka utes?

Store-wide, our best-selling Rockarmor bars include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux. For Wānaka, the Hilux, Ranger, D-Max and Prado bars suit the vehicles most common on local roads.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

Yes, with decent tools and a second pair of hands. The bullbar bolts on. The lift kit is simpler with a hoist and spring compressors, and it needs a wheel alignment afterwards.

Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Wānaka?

Take it to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop. Any competent Upper Clutha workshop can fit a RAW 4x4 or Ultima 4x4 kit.

Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?

2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so speak to a certifier before you modify anything.
