4x4 Parts & Accessories in Lower Hutt

Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories across Lower Hutt, from Petone and the Seaview industrial area to Naenae, Taitā, Stokes Valley, Eastbourne and over the hill in Wainuiomata. We stock Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. Kren Bits is an online New Zealand store, not a Hutt Valley shop: you order online, we deliver to your door, and you fit the parts yourself or get your local mechanic to do it. Every bar and kit is a bolt-on part supplied with its own fitting hardware.

4x4 parts delivered to Lower Hutt

Lower Hutt is New Zealand's sixth-largest city, with about 114,000 people living on the Hutt River floodplain and in the hill suburbs around it. It's also still the main centre for light industry in the Wellington region. Petone, Seaview and Gracefield were historically the region's industrial heartland, and the workshops, yards and depots there keep a lot of utes on the road. The Wainuiomata ward covers most of the city's land area, much of it sparsely populated hill country. On the eastern side of the harbour, Eastbourne sits at the end of a narrow, exposed coastal road through the Eastern Bays. A Hutt ute can spend Monday on a Seaview job site and Saturday on the Wainuiomata Coast Road. Protection and suspension are the usual upgrades.

Orders to Lower Hutt go by courier, and bullbars and other bulky items travel by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number first. Most fitment problems come from mixing up model years or facelifts, so we check before anything is sent.

Bullbars for Lower Hutt drivers

We sell Rockarmor bullbars, a steel range designed for the utes and wagons that are common on Kiwi roads. The GT Hoop bar replaces the whole factory bumper. It's powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a fit made for one specific model.

Rockarmor bullbars suited to Lower Hutt utes:

Fitting one is a two-person job but straightforward. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the existing chassis mounts, and the indicators, fog lights and parking sensors are moved across. If you don't have the space or the help, any mechanic or auto-electrician in the Hutt can fit it. Many owners add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and a pair of Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights at the same time, especially if they head over to the coast after dark.

Lift kits for Lower Hutt 4x4s

Once a bullbar and winch are on the front, the factory springs sit lower than they should, so a lift kit is the natural next step. It also gives you a bit more clearance for fords and rutted gravel. We stock two lift kit brands.

RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (about 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load ratings so you can match it to an unladen weekday truck or one that carries a full tray or tows a trailer most of the time. Popular choices for Hutt Valley vehicles:

Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common models, which is useful in a city with plenty of long-serving work trucks:

A lift kit bolts in, but the job is easiest with a hoist, and the vehicle always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you go further.

Popular 4x4s in Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata

Utes are the everyday work vehicle around Seaview and Gracefield. For the Toyota Hilux we stock a Hilux bullbar for every recent generation, from the 2005–2011 N70 to the 2015–2020 N80, plus the RAW N70 Hilux lift kit for older trucks. Ford Ranger owners can pair the PX2/PX3 GT Hoop with a lift, and those with newer trucks will find the Next Gen Ranger GT Hoop too.

Nissan Navaras are well covered, with the Navara D40 Premium bullbar and the D40 lift kit. Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton owners have the D-Max GT Hoop and the Triton MQ GT Hoop. For Wainuiomata families with a wagon for camping weekends at Catchpool, there's the Prado 150 bullbar and Prado lift kit, and the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit suits the 76, 78 and 79.

4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Lower Hutt

Wainuiomata Coast Road and Catchpool Valley. Lower Hutt has its own way into the hills. From Wainuiomata, the Coast Road runs south for 10km to the entrance of Remutaka Forest Park, and the Catchpool Valley road takes you another 2km to the car park, campground and picnic areas. DOC says that if the ford on the access road is flowing, you should park before it and walk in on the Ngā Taonga Nature Walk. The gate is open from 6am to 8pm between late September and early April, and from 6am to 6pm for the rest of the year. Fires aren't allowed in Catchpool Valley, and cell coverage is patchy there and non-existent in the Ōrongorongo Valley.

The Wild Coast and Turakirae Head. At the end of the Wainuiomata Coast Road, a car park by the Ōrongorongo River marks the start of DOC's Wild Coast Track to Turakirae Head. Its uplifted marine terraces were formed by earthquakes on the Wellington Fault, and it has one of the largest fur seal colonies in the country outside the South Island. Past the gate it's a walking and cycling route across working farmland, not a public 4x4 track, so leave the truck at the car park. Wainuiomata itself only has one road in and out, Wainuiomata Hill Road, so this whole coast is a proper drive from the valley floor.

Eastbourne and Pencarrow. The coast road from Eastbourne runs out to Burdan's Gate at the end of Muritai Road. Beyond it, the Pencarrow Coast Road continues about 7km to Pencarrow Lighthouse and on to Lake Kohangatera in East Harbour Regional Park. Vehicles aren't allowed past Burdan's Gate, so it's one for bikes and boots. Park at the gate and go on foot or by bike.

Akatarawa Forest. For proper 4WD tracks, Hutt drivers head north to Greater Wellington's Akatarawa Forest behind Upper Hutt, about 15,000 hectares of native and plantation forest. Casual 4WD trips aren't permitted. Vehicles go in on organised trips with an ARAC-certified trip leader carrying the access permit, and those trips are run by clubs.

Clubs. Lower Hutt is home to two NZFWDA-affiliated clubs: Capital Cruisers 4WD Club and Windy City Off-Roaders, which is based in Naenae. The Cross Country Vehicle Club (Wellington), one of the larger 4WD clubs in the country, holds its monthly meetings at the Naenae Bowling Club on Vogel Street and belongs to the Akatarawa Recreational Access Committee. Joining a club is the straightforward way to drive the permit-only tracks in the Akatarawas and learn recovery skills from experienced members.

Fitting your parts in Lower Hutt

Kren Bits parts are built for DIY. They bolt to existing mounts, come with their hardware, and don't need any cutting or welding. With a level garage floor, a socket set and a second pair of hands, you can fit a bullbar at home. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in the Hutt, and they can install them for you. Wiring for a winch and driving lights is a good job for an auto-electrician. After any suspension work, book a wheel alignment to keep the tyres wearing evenly and the steering straight.
