4x4 Parts & Accessories in Masterton
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Masterton and the rest of the Wairarapa — Rockarmor bullbars, RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits, rock sliders, winches and driving lights. We don't run a shop in Masterton or anywhere else: Kren Bits is a New Zealand online store. You order on the website, we send the parts to your home, farm or yard, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Our bars and kits for the utes that work the Wairarapa are bolt-on, supplied with fitting hardware, and chosen so a practical owner or any local workshop can install them.
4x4 parts delivered to Masterton
Masterton is the Wairarapa's main town, with around 28,900 people across the district (2025 estimate) and about 100km of road and the Remutaka ranges between it and Wellington. It sits on the Waipoua stream between the Ruamāhanga and Waingawa rivers, with the Tararua Range rising directly to the west and sheep and beef hill country rolling out east towards the coast. The town grew up servicing the farms around it, it's home to the Golden Shears shearing competition, and the logging trade has grown enough that a rail freight hub opened at Waingawa in 2016 to handle it.
That makes Masterton a working-ute town in the truest sense. Trucks here carry dogs and fencing gear, tow stock trailers and boat trailers, run forestry and gravel roads, and do the long trip out to Castlepoint or up to the Tararua road ends at the weekend. Protection and suspension are the upgrades that matter: a strong steel bar for stock, deer and gravel, and a lift kit that carries a bar, a winch and a full tray without sagging.
Orders to Masterton travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars and other big items go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent — a lot of Wairarapa utes are older or have had parts swapped, so it pays to check.

Bullbars for Masterton drivers
Our bullbar range is Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed around the vehicles New Zealanders drive and work. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full bar replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights and mounting points for a winch and driving lights. Each bar is built for one model, so it mounts to your vehicle's own chassis points rather than a universal bracket.
Rockarmor bullbars that suit Wairarapa farm and work utes:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N70 2005–2011
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
Fitting a steel bullbar is a two-person job with ordinary tools. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any sensors are moved across. If you'd rather not do it in the shed, any Masterton mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. For back-country runs and dark rural roads, add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights.
Lift kits for Masterton 4x4s
A steel bar and winch load the front springs, and a farm ute with a deck, a dog box and a trailer on the back loads the rear. A lift kit brings the height back and gives the suspension real carrying capacity. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for trucks that run light or ones that carry and tow every day. Good matches for the Wairarapa:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 Series
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Isuzu D-Max 2012–2017
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
Ultima 4x4 covers the older trucks that are still earning their keep on Wairarapa farms:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mazda Courier / B2600 1985–2006
Lift kits bolt in but are best fitted by a mechanic with a hoist, and they always need a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles; bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you go further.
Popular 4x4s in Masterton and the Wairarapa
Farm utes rule the Wairarapa. The Toyota Hilux is the backbone of it, from N80s wearing a Hilux GT Hoop bullbar to N70s that suit the 2012–2015 Hilux bar and the N70 Hilux lift kit, and plenty of older LN-series trucks still on the LN105/106 Ultima kit.
The Ford Ranger is just as common on town and farm — a Ranger bullbar is an easy first upgrade — and the Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton (the Triton MR bullbar suits current trucks) and Navara D40 and D22 make up much of the rest. LandCruiser 70 Series utes are a common sight on stations, and the LandCruiser 70 lift kit suits them, while the Prado — with its Prado 150 bullbar — is the family tow wagon.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Masterton
Castlepoint beach. About an hour from Masterton via Te Ore Ore Road and the Masterton Castlepoint Road, Castlepoint is one of the few places in the region where vehicles are still allowed on the sand. DOC says motorbikes, cars, 4WDs and tractors towing boats are allowed on the beach but not on the sand dunes, and that boats and jet skis launch from an area people also swim and surf in — so drive slowly and watch for others. In 2020 Greater Wellington and the Castlepoint ratepayers' association agreed that driving can continue on Basin Lagoon Beach, with vehicles kept off the dunes and people asked to stay off Bird Island to protect its wildlife. Boats must keep to 5 knots within 200m of the beach.
Tararua foothills road ends. The Tararua Range sits right behind Masterton, and several gravel roads lead to its edge. Kiriwhakapapa Road leaves SH2 about 15km north of town and runs 7km, including about 5km of gravel, to a DOC campsite in Tararua Forest Park, where the Kiriwhakapapa Loop Track and the climb to Blue Range Hut begin. Mikimiki Road, also off SH2, leads to an old bush railway walk into the Tararua Forest, and Upper Waingawa Road ends at a small car park. These are scenic back-road drives to walking tracks — the forest park itself is for walking, not driving.
East Coast back roads. Some of the Wairarapa's best 4x4 touring is on public gravel. Club trip reports in NZ4WD magazine describe convoys running from Masterton out through Mauriceville, Ihuraua, Alfredton and Bideford, and further north over Pori Road and the Makuri Gorge and back via the Towai Road and Waihi Falls area. After rain expect slips and washouts, leave gates as you find them, and remember that farm tracks off these roads are private.
Clubs. Masterton has two NZFWDA-affiliated clubs of its own. Offroad Wairarapa 4x4 Club meets on the second Sunday of each month at 4pm at Deco Precasters, 26 Bentley Street, and the Wairarapa Four Wheel Drive Club meets at 7.30pm on the last Tuesday of the month at Club Wairarapa (RSA), 20 Essex Street. The Valley 4WD Club near Greytown and the Featherston Family 4x4 Club are also affiliated. Clubs run organised trips and training, and they're also the route into Akatarawa Forest over the hill, where 4WD access is only through organised trips with certified leaders.
Fitting your parts in Masterton
Everything Kren Bits sells is designed for DIY fitting. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights go on with hand tools, stands and a mate to help. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician — any of them can fit a bar or wire in lights. Lift kits are easiest on a hoist, and always book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.

Fit it yourself, or take the kit to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop — any competent workshop can bolt it in and book the alignment.
