4x4 parts delivered to Ashburton
Ashburton is a farming town through and through. Around 21,600 people live there, making it the fourth-largest urban area in Canterbury, and it sits on State Highway 1 about 85km south-west of Christchurch and 75km north of Timaru, with the Ashburton River / Hakatere running through the middle and Tinwald on the south bank. Irrigation has made the district a dairying stronghold, more than 100 local farmers grow potatoes, corn and peas, and primary industries make up a much bigger share of the district economy than the national average. It's also known as the "Cooperative Capital of New Zealand", with more than 40 co-operative companies operating in the district.
That means Ashburton utes do real work. They run irrigator checks at dawn, tow stock trailers and spray units, and spend long days on gravel between paddocks. Then at the weekend many head inland to Methven, the Rakaia Gorge and the Ashburton Lakes. A bullbar protects the front end from stock and gravel, and a lift kit stops a loaded tray, a bar and a winch from dragging the suspension down.
Orders to Ashburton travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent. The most common mix-up is the model year, so check with us first.

Bullbars for Ashburton drivers
Our bars are Rockarmor, a steel bullbar brand built for the trucks Kiwis actually drive. The GT Hoop is a full bar replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and model-specific brackets. On a farm ute that meets stock in the race every day, that protection pays for itself.
Rockarmor bars that suit Mid Canterbury utes:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N70 2012–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar Combo — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79 2007–2023
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Fitting a bar takes two people but isn't complicated: the factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors go across. If you'd rather not do it on the farm, any Ashburton mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. A Rockarmor 12,000lb winch is handy for wet paddocks and riverbank tracks, and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights help on those pre-dawn starts.
Lift kits for Ashburton 4x4s
A working ute carries weight front and rear, so many Mid Canterbury owners fit a lift kit alongside a bar. We stock two brands.
RAW 4x4 kits are our pick for modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options so you can match the kit to a ute that's loaded or towing most days. Good choices for Ashburton:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota LandCruiser 76/78/79
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Ford Ranger PX3 2019–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Isuzu D-Max 2012–2017
Ultima 4x4 covers the older farm trucks and less common 4x4s that are still going strong in Mid Canterbury:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN110/160/170 1997–2005
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mazda Courier / B2600 1985–2006
A lift kit is a bolt-in job for a mechanic with a hoist, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. Kits in the 2-inch range are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.
Popular 4x4s in Ashburton and Mid Canterbury
For Toyota farm utes, the Hilux is covered from older trucks on a Hilux N70 lift kit to newer ones with a Hilux bullbar, and on the bigger properties a LandCruiser 70 Series suits a LandCruiser 79 lift kit. Ford Ranger owners can choose the Ranger bullbar, Isuzu drivers the D-Max bullbar, and Mitsubishi owners the Triton lift kit. Navara D40s get the Navara D40 lift kit.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Ashburton
Hakatere Conservation Park and the Ashburton Lakes. The Ashburton Lakes, including Lake Heron, Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater, lie about 74km inland, with Mount Somers on the way. DOC's route to Lake Heron follows Ashburton Gorge Road from Mount Somers, turning onto Hakatere Heron Road after 23km. The Harrisons Bight track near Lake Heron is open to vehicles, and it needs a DOC vehicle access permit; only registered 4WDs, motorbikes and ATVs are eligible, and the season runs over summer, closing on 30 April 2027 for the 2026/27 season. The track can close at short notice for fire risk, wet weather or damage. When the Methven Lions Club ran its Two Gorge Safari charity trip, more than 300 4WDs crossed shingle fans and tussock country through Glenfalloch and Lake Heron stations and the Hakatere Conservation Area, finishing at Mt Somers.
The Rakaia River. The Rakaia is Ashburton's big northern river, and Rakaia township is about 28km north of town. Newtracs lists a short, easy 0.4km Rakaia River access trail near Ashburton that leads to the braided riverbed, with the warning that river levels can change quickly. State Highway 77 runs from Ashburton through Methven and on to the Rakaia Gorge. Keep off the riverbeds in nesting season: Environment Canterbury names the Rakaia and Rangitata among the rivers where drivers should stay clear from September to February.
The high-country rivers from Methven. When the NZFWDA held its national annual meeting in Methven, the week's trips included the Lawrence River to Hermitage Hut, the Havelock River to Mistake Flats Hut, the Rakaia River to Reischek Hut and huts up the Avoca and Wilberforce rivers, which gives a good idea of what's within reach of Ashburton. Most of this country crosses station land, so check the access arrangements before you go. In the Harper River valley, for example, the vehicle track crosses private land from Harper Road, and Glenthorne Station publishes its public access information.
Mid-Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club. Ashburton has its own NZFWDA-affiliated club. The Mid-Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club meets at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at its club rooms at Tinwald Domain on Maronan Road. During the NZFWDA's Methven week, visitors also used the Mid Canterbury 4x4 park off Cochranes Road in Ashburton.
Fitting your parts in Ashburton
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights bolt on with the hardware supplied, and many farm owners fit them in the workshop with a second pair of hands. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Ashburton. Always book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
