Towns we deliver to in Canterbury

Canterbury is the South Island's largest region, and its 4x4s work everywhere from city building sites to irrigated dairy farms and high-country stations. These pages cover our main Canterbury towns in more detail:

We deliver to the smaller towns too:

  • Lincoln: linked to Rolleston by a sealed shared path and bus route, in the heart of Selwyn.
  • Darfield: the service town on SH73, about 35km west of Christchurch and the gateway to the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers.
  • Oxford: the starting point for Ashley Gorge Road, Lees Valley Road and the Townshend Track.
  • Amberley: the Hurunui District seat on SH1, about 50km north of Christchurch, serving dairy, arable and sheep farms and grape growers.
  • Methven: about 33km inland from Ashburton, near Mt Hutt and on SH77 towards the Rakaia Gorge.
  • Geraldine: part of Timaru District and a stop on the Inland Scenic Route.
  • Temuka: one of the Timaru District towns, alongside Geraldine and Pleasant Point.
  • Waimate: the nearest base for the Hunters Hills and the Mt Studholme Road 4WD track.
  • Twizel: the Mackenzie District's largest town, built in 1968 for the Upper Waitaki hydro scheme, beside Lake Ruataniwha.
  • Kaikōura: about 180km north of Christchurch on SH1, hit hard by the 2016 earthquake, with farming and crayfishing alongside tourism.

Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.

Bullbars for Canterbury utes

Our bullbars are Rockarmor, a steel bar range designed for the trucks New Zealanders actually drive. The GT Hoop is a full bar replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and model-specific fitment. Popular choices for Canterbury vehicles include the GT Hoop for the Hilux N80, the GT Hoop for the Ranger PX2/PX3, the D-Max 2020–2024 bar, the Navara D40 Premium bar and the LandCruiser 70 Series combo. A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job, or any local mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for the high country.

Lift kits for Canterbury 4x4s

RAW 4x4 2-inch kits suit modern utes, with front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, and load options for towing or carrying. Popular kits include the Hilux N80, Ranger PX3 and LandCruiser 76/78/79 kits. Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common trucks such as the Hilux LN110/160/170 and Navara D22. Kits in the 2-inch range are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles, but bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier. Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards.

4x4 tracks and clubs across Canterbury

The big gorges. The Waimakariri, Rakaia, Rangitata and Waitaki gorges each carry 4WD routes into the high country, and summer is the most reliable season for the alpine tracks. River crossings need careful judgement in snowmelt and after rain.

Hakatere Conservation Park. Around Lake Heron, inland from Mount Somers, Hakatere is a classic Canterbury destination. DOC requires a vehicle access permit for the Harrisons Bight track, which is open to registered vehicles over summer and closes on 30 April 2027 for the 2026/27 season.

Upper Rangitata and the Mackenzie. DOC says four-wheel-drive access is possible beyond Mesopotamia Station up the Rangitata and Havelock rivers, on a track that is not marked or defined. From Lake Tekapo, Lilybank Road leads to the Macaulay and Godley riverbeds, where 4WD is needed, and several Mackenzie valleys need station permission.

Braided rivers in nesting season. Environment Canterbury asks drivers to avoid riverbeds from September to February, when birds such as the wrybill and banded dotterel nest on the gravels of the Waimakariri, Rakaia, Rangitata and Ashley Rakahuri. The lower Ashley already has a vehicle ban during nesting season, and the Northern Pegasus Bay Bylaw controls vehicles on the beaches between the Waimakariri and Ashley river mouths.

Clubs. Canterbury has three NZFWDA-affiliated clubs: 4X4 Events Inc, which meets at the Papanui RSA in Christchurch and runs the King of Canterbury Enduro; the Mid-Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club, with club rooms at Tinwald Domain in Ashburton; and the South Island Deaf 4x4 Club in Christchurch.

Fitting your parts

Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights bolt on with the hardware supplied, and a confident home mechanic can fit most of them. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in Canterbury. Always book a wheel alignment after suspension work.

Canterbury 4x4 FAQs

Do you deliver everywhere in Canterbury?

Yes. We deliver across the region, from Christchurch and Selwyn to North Canterbury, Mid and South Canterbury, the Mackenzie and Kaikōura. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight.

Do you have a store in Canterbury?

No. Kren Bits is online only, with no shop anywhere in Canterbury. Order on the website or call 021 288 6816 to check fitment.

What's the most popular bullbar for Canterbury utes?

The best-selling Rockarmor bars store-wide include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

Yes. Most bullbars are a two-person bolt-on job with basic tools. Lift kits are bolt-in but easier on a hoist, or your local mechanic can fit one and book the alignment.

Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?

2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
