Our bullbars and lift kits are bolt-on and supplied with fitting hardware, so a capable home mechanic or any local workshop can do the install.
4x4 parts delivered to Rolleston
Rolleston is one of the fastest-growing towns in New Zealand. In 2001 it had about 2,800 people. By the 2023 census it had 28,449, up 62 percent in five years, and by mid-2025 the estimate was around 34,100, making it the second-largest urban area in Canterbury after Christchurch. It's the seat of the Selwyn District, 22km south-west of central Christchurch on the Canterbury Plains, and freight is a big part of its story. The Izone industrial park holds The Warehouse Group's South Island distribution centre, and Rolleston's inland port is designed to take truck traffic off Christchurch's roads on the way to Lyttelton.
So Rolleston's 4x4s are a mixed bunch. There are tradies' utes for the endless new subdivisions, family wagons from the newer streets, and farm trucks from the paddocks between Rolleston, Lincoln and Burnham, where the army camp sits about 3km west of the town centre. What they share is quick access to SH1 and to SH73 out towards Darfield and the mountains. A bullbar is real protection on the long straight plains roads, and a lift kit keeps the truck level under a bar, a winch and a full load.
Orders to Rolleston go by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars travel by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the part number before anything is sent. Getting the model year wrong is the mistake we see most, so check with us before ordering.

Bullbars for Rolleston drivers
Our bullbar range is built on Rockarmor, a steel bar brand designed for the trucks New Zealanders actually drive. The GT Hoop is a full bar replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and model-specific fitment. We've included the current Hilux and Ranger shapes here alongside the proven older ones.
Rockarmor bars that suit Selwyn utes and wagons:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux 2022 to current widebody
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoopless Bullbar — Next Gen Ford Ranger
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
Fitting a steel bar takes two people but isn't complicated. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors move across. If you'd rather not do it at home, any Rolleston mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. A Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights complete the front end for dark drives on the plains roads.
Lift kits for Rolleston 4x4s
The extra weight of a bar over the front axle is why many Selwyn owners lift the suspension at the same time. We stock two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 is our go-to for modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options for a commuter that tows at the weekend or a work ute that's loaded every day. Popular RAW 4x4 kits:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Ford Ranger Next Gen 2022+
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mazda BT-50 2020+
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, the kind that still work on Selwyn farms:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux LN105/106 1989–1997
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Nissan Navara D22 1999–2015
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota FJ Cruiser 2006–2010
A lift kit is a bolt-in job for a mechanic with a hoist, followed by a wheel alignment every time. Kits in the 2-inch range are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles, but bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
Popular 4x4s in Rolleston and Selwyn
The current Hilux widebody bullbar and the Next Gen Ranger lift kit suit the newest trucks, while the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar and Ranger PX3 lift kit cover the previous shape. Isuzu owners can fit the D-Max lift kit, Triton drivers the Triton MR bullbar, and on the farms the LandCruiser 70 Series lift kit and Navara D40 bullbar are worth a look.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Rolleston
Selwyn River / Waikirikiri. The river the district is named after rises in the Big Ben Range and flows 80km east to Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora. On the plains it is unusual: water sinks into the gravels, and in most months surface flow disappears within about 5km of the foothills, leaving the next 35km or so usually dry. In drought years it can dry right up at the State Highway 1 crossing at Selwyn. It is still a braided river, and Environment Canterbury asks drivers to keep off Canterbury riverbeds through the bird nesting season, September to February.
Up SH73 from Darfield. Darfield, about 35km west of Christchurch on State Highway 73, is Rolleston's gateway to the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers and the Southern Alps. Newtracs lists the Old West Coast Road in the Selwyn District as a short 1.2km 4WD section that includes a river crossing, and advises checking conditions with the land manager. Further up, Lyndon Road is a gravel road along the south-west side of Lake Lyndon, between Castle Hill and Porters Pass, linking that area to Lake Coleridge as a quieter alternative to the highway. Craigieburn Forest Park is about 110km from Christchurch along the same highway.
Rakaia Gorge and the Ashburton Lakes. State Highway 77 runs from Darfield through the Rakaia Gorge to Methven, and the big Canterbury gorges, including the Rakaia, each carry 4WD routes into the high country. Beyond Mount Somers, Hakatere Conservation Park around Lake Heron is a classic destination. DOC requires a vehicle access permit for the Harrisons Bight track there, open to registered 4WDs, motorbikes and ATVs over the summer season.
Kaitorete Spit. South-east of Rolleston, Kaitorete Spit separates Te Waihora from the Pacific, with a gravel road running about half its length from Birdlings Flat. The dunes hold most of the surviving shrubby tororaro and rare moths found nowhere else, so stay on the formed road.
Clubs. Rolleston sits between Canterbury's two main NZFWDA-affiliated clubs. 4X4 Events Inc meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Papanui RSA in Christchurch and runs club trips, trials and the King of Canterbury Enduro. The Mid-Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club meets on the last Thursday of the month at its club rooms at Tinwald Domain in Ashburton.
Fitting your parts in Rolleston
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights bolt on with the supplied hardware, and with a decent socket set and a helper most owners can fit them in a garage. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Rolleston. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
Rolleston 4x4 FAQs
Do you deliver to Rolleston?
Yes. We deliver to Rolleston, Lincoln, Burnham, West Melton, Prebbleton, Templeton, Darfield and the rest of Selwyn. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight.
Do you have a store in Rolleston?
No. Kren Bits is online only, with no Rolleston shop. Order on the website or call us on 021 288 6816 to check fitment first.
What's the most popular bullbar for Selwyn utes?
The best-selling Rockarmor bars store-wide include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.
Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?
A bullbar is usually a two-person bolt-on job with basic tools. Lift kits are bolt-in too, but easier on a hoist, and they always need a wheel alignment afterwards.
Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Rolleston?
Any local mechanic or 4x4 workshop in Rolleston can fit RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 kits. Ask them to book the alignment at the same time.
Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?
2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
