4x4 Parts & Accessories in Taupō
Kren Bits delivers 4x4 parts and accessories to Taupō, the lake settlements and the rest of the district, from Rockarmor bullbars and RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 lift kits to winches, rock sliders and LED driving lights. We're a New Zealand online store, not a Taupō shop: you order on the website, the parts arrive at your door, and you fit them yourself or take them to your local mechanic. Every bar and kit we sell for central North Island trucks is bolt-on and comes with the hardware to fit it.
4x4 parts delivered to Taupō
Taupō sits on the north-eastern shore of Lake Taupō, the country's largest freshwater lake, with an estimated 27,000 people in the urban area. The Waikato River leaves the lake right through the middle of town on its way to Huka Falls. Tourism is the summer engine, but Taupō is also a working town. It services the pine plantations around it, including the large Kaingaroa Forest, a large sawmill operates about 3km north-east of the centre, and seven geothermal power stations surround the town, including the historic Wairakei plant just to the north.
For 4x4 owners, the geography is the attraction. Taupō is 80km south of Rotorua, 153km from Hamilton and 50km north of Tūrangi, with Tongariro National Park to the south and the Kaimanawa ranges to the east. A Taupō ute might tow a boat to the lake on Saturday, carry hunting gear into the Kaimanawas on Sunday and cross the Desert Road in winter. That calls for a strong front end, good lights and suspension that copes with weight and rough metal roads.
Orders to Taupō go by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars travel by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is sent.

Bullbars for Taupō drivers
Our bullbars come from Rockarmor, a steel bar range designed around the trucks New Zealanders actually drive. The Rockarmor GT Hoop is a full replacement for the factory bumper in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounting points for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each specific model. Between forest roads, open highway at night and deer country, front-end protection makes sense around Taupō.
Rockarmor bars that suit the utes and wagons common in the district:
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota LandCruiser 200 2007–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015–2018
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
Fitting a steel bar is a two-person job but not a hard one. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any parking sensors are moved across. If you'd rather not do it at home, any Taupō mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Complete the front end with a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights, which earn their keep on a dark winter night on the Desert Road.
Lift kits for Taupō 4x4s
A bullbar and winch add a lot of weight over the front axle, and a boat or a loaded tray adds more at the back. That's why many Taupō owners fit a lift kit at the same time. We stock two lift kit brands.
RAW 4x4 kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options so the kit matches how you use the truck, from a weekday commuter to a fully kitted touring rig. Popular picks for Taupō:
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2022
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2023
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Triton MR/MV 2018–2024
- RAW 4x4 2" Lift Kit — Mazda BT-50 2020+
Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, including older wagons that still make good hunting trucks:
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota FJ Cruiser 2006–2010
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Toyota Hilux Surf 180 1996–2002
- Ultima 2" Lift Kit — Mitsubishi Pajero V7#
A lift kit is a bolt-in job for a mechanic with a hoist, and it always needs a wheel alignment afterwards. Kits in the 2-inch range are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier before you fit anything.
Popular 4x4s in Taupō and the central North Island
With hunting, boating and touring all on the doorstep, wagons matter as much as utes in Taupō. Prado owners can pair the Prado 150 bullbar with the Prado lift kit, LandCruiser 200 drivers have the LandCruiser 200 bullbar, and older FJ80 wagons can wear LandCruiser FJ80 rock sliders. The Hilux is as common as anywhere, and the Hilux bullbar and Hilux lift kit suit the late N80. Ranger owners can fit the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar, Isuzu owners the D-Max bullbar, and anyone towing heavy with a 70 Series can look at the LandCruiser 76/78/79 lift kit.
4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Taupō
Kaingaroa Forest (permit only). Kaingaroa is a large pine plantation and a working forest, and it is not open for casual driving. Recreational access for hunting, fishing and gamebird shooting is by permit, applied for online through FIRST Security, with each permit covering a season and renewed every year. Every vehicle entering the forest needs a current WOF, registration and at least third-party insurance, and the gates run from 6am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays. The winter season usually opens on the first weekend of May, and in the fire season, 1 October to 30 April, vehicle access is at the forest manager's discretion. Forest roads carry oversized logging trucks, and forest security runs speed checks, so drive to the limits.
The Desert Road and Tukino. South of Tūrangi, State Highway 1 crosses the Rangipo Desert as the Desert Road. Its 1,074m summit is the highest pass on the state highway network, and the road is closed for short periods most winters because of snow and ice. Off it, the Tukino Mountain Road climbs from about 1,000m to about 1,700m at the Tukino ski field on Ruapehu's eastern side. The first 7km to the lower car park is gravel and passable in 2WD, but beyond that the road is 4WD only, with chains when instructed. It can be impassable through snow drifts even for 4WDs, so check the road status before you go and don't attempt it if it's listed as closed. The road is maintained by volunteers, so drive it gently.
Kaimanawa Forest Park. East of the lake, the Kaimanawa ranges are a big expanse of native forest, shrubland and tussock. Most vehicle access is from the north and west, mostly on unsealed roads across a mix of private and DOC land, and access over private land is by permission only. One way in from Taupō is to head about 27km east on SH5, turn onto Taharua Road for 9.5km, then follow gravel Clements Mill Road for 21km to the Clements Road End campsite. DOC warns that fallen trees in high winds can affect access.
Pureora Forest Park. West of Lake Taupō, Pureora straddles the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto ranges. DOC's Select Loop Road, off Waitaramoa Road and SH30, is an easy drive on formed metalled roads, and the King Country 4WD group works with DOC to open and maintain 4WD tracks for public access nearby. There's no fuel at Pureora.
Clubs. Taupō has its own NZFWDA-affiliated club, the Taupō 4WD Club, listed on the association's club directory. The next closest affiliated clubs are the South Waikato 4WD Club, which meets at the Tīrau Hall, and Rotorua's Geyserland 4WD Club and Sulphur City 4Wheelers. Joining a club is the easiest way to reach private and forestry land, which always needs the owner's or manager's permission.
Fitting your parts in Taupō
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights bolt to the factory mounting points with the supplied hardware, and many Taupō owners fit them at home with a helper. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Taupō. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
