Towns we deliver to in Waikato
The Waikato covers dairy plains, thoroughbred country, forestry towns, a volcanic plateau and two very different coastlines. Pick your town for its local tracks, clubs and the parts that suit the vehicles people drive there:
- Hamilton: the region's city and the centre of one of the country's busiest ute regions.
- Cambridge: the equine capital of New Zealand, beside Lake Karapiro.
- Te Awamutu: Waipā's dairy town, in the shadow of Mount Pirongia.
- Tokoroa: the South Waikato forestry town beside Kinleith.
- Taupō: on Lake Taupō, close to Kaingaroa Forest, the Kaimanawas and the Desert Road.
We also deliver to every smaller town in the region, including:
- Huntly: about 32km north of Hamilton on the Waikato River, home to the country's largest thermal power station and a long coal-mining history.
- Ngāruawāhia: where the Waikato and Waipā rivers meet, about 20km north-west of Hamilton, and home of Tūrangawaewae Marae and the Kīngitanga.
- Morrinsville: a dairy service town in the country's densest concentration of dairy cattle, known for its fibreglass cows.
- Matamata: at the foot of the Kaimai Range, known for thoroughbred breeding and the nearby Hobbiton Movie Set.
- Te Aroha: the nearest town to the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park, with Thompsons Track 12km to the south.
- Thames: the largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula, and home base of the Thames Valley 4WD Club.
- Whitianga: on Mercury Bay and the 5km Buffalo Beach, with a marina and a two-minute passenger ferry across the harbour.
- Paeroa: the southern gateway to the Coromandel and the western gateway to the Karangahake Gorge, famous for L&P.
- Waihi: a gold-mining town since 1878, with the Martha pit in town and Waihi Beach about 10km east.
- Tuakau: at the foot of the Bombay Hills above the Waikato River, on the road west to Port Waikato and Klondyke Road.

Bullbars for Waikato utes
Our bullbars come from Rockarmor, a steel range built for the trucks New Zealanders drive. The GT Hoop is a full bumper replacement in powder-coated steel, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and a fit made for each model. On dairy-farm races, forestry roads or the Desert Road at night, it's solid protection.
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Hilux N80 2015–2020
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Ford Ranger PX2/PX3
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Isuzu D-Max 2020–2024
- Rockarmor Premium Bullbar — Nissan Navara D40 2005–2015
- Rockarmor GT Hoop Bullbar — Toyota Prado 150 2009–2015
A bullbar is a two-person bolt-on job: the factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the lights and sensors move across. If you'd rather not, any local mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights to complete the front end.
Lift kits for Waikato 4x4s
RAW 4x4 2-inch (about 50mm) kits suit modern utes and wagons. Each kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options to match how you use the truck. Popular picks include the Hilux N80 kit, the Triton MR/MV kit, the Navara D40 kit and the LandCruiser 76/78/79 kit.
Ultima 4x4 covers older and less common 4x4s, such as the Hilux LN110/160/170, the Navara D22 and the Hilux Surf 180.
Every lift needs a wheel alignment afterwards. 2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
4x4 tracks and clubs across Waikato
Thompsons Track (Kaimai Range). Off Thompson Road 12km south of Te Aroha, this legal paper road crosses the Kaimai Range towards Katikati and has carried 4WDs since the 1980s. Heavy use has worn it badly. Matamata-Piako District Council closes it to some or all vehicles for repairs, slips have cut the through route on the eastern side, and side tracks lead onto private land. Check the council's track page before you go.
Pureora Forest Park (King Country). DOC's Select Loop Road off SH30 is an easy drive on formed metalled roads, and the King Country 4WD group works with DOC to open and maintain 4WD tracks for public access nearby. There's no fuel at Pureora.
West coast. The coastal back road from Kawhia to Raglan winds through bush-covered hills, and the 18km Klondyke Road near Port Waikato is steep and winding. At Kawhia, hot water seeps up through the ocean beach sand for about two hours either side of low tide.
Desert Road and Tukino. South of Tūrangi, the Tukino Mountain Road leaves SH1 and climbs towards the Tukino ski field. It's 4WD only beyond the lower car park, with chains when instructed, and can be closed by snow.
Forestry. The big plantations, including Kinleith near Tokoroa and Kaingaroa near Taupō, are working plantation forests. Kaingaroa offers seasonal recreational permits for hunting and fishing, and Kinleith access is managed through permits from the forest manager. Never drive in without one.
Clubs. NZFWDA-affiliated clubs in the region include the Waikato Four Wheel Drive Club and Cozzie Four Wheelers in Hamilton, the Kaimai 4x4 Club at Hinuera near Matamata, the South Waikato 4WD Club (meeting at the Tīrau Hall), the Thames Valley 4WD Club (meeting at the Ngatea RSA), the Whangamata 4WD Club, the King Country 4WD Club in Te Kūiti and the Taupō 4WD Club.
Fitting your parts
Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. They bolt to factory mounts and come with the hardware. Fit them at home with a helper, or take them to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician anywhere in the Waikato. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.
