4x4 parts delivered to Tokoroa

Tokoroa is the main centre of the South Waikato District, about 88km south-east of Hamilton and roughly midway between Hamilton and Taupō on State Highway 1, with an estimated 14,500 people. It is a town built by forestry. Pinus radiata was introduced here as a commercial crop between 1925 and 1935, and between 1947 and 1976 New Zealand Forest Products built about 2,230 workers' houses here for its Kinleith mill, about 8km south of town.

The pine forests still surround the town. Kinleith Forest is the largest forest owned by Taumata Plantations, whose estate is managed by Manulife Forest Management from an office in Tokoroa. Plenty of Tokoroa utes earn their living on forestry roads, contract work, farms and hunting blocks, and that means gravel, logging-truck traffic, ruts and long days on the clock. A bullbar that protects the front end and suspension that copes with a loaded tray are working gear here, not show pieces.

Orders to Tokoroa travel by courier through our New Zealand network, and bullbars go by freight. Tell us your vehicle and we'll confirm the exact part number before anything is dispatched. Utes that changed shape partway through a model run are where most fitment mistakes happen, so give us the build year if you can.

To check fitment, use the vehicle finder at the top of krenbits.com, or call the Kren Offroad team on 021 288 6816.

Bullbars for Tokoroa drivers

Our bullbars come from Rockarmor, a steel range built for the trucks New Zealanders really use. The Rockarmor GT Hoop replaces the factory bumper with a powder-coated steel bar, with hoops that protect the grille and headlights, mounts for a winch and driving lights, and brackets made for each model. On a forest road at dawn, when a deer or a pig crosses in front of you, that is the difference between a dent and a written-off radiator.

Rockarmor bars for the utes that work around the South Waikato:

A steel bar is a two-person job, but it isn't complicated. The factory bumper comes off, the bar bolts to the chassis mounts, and the indicators and any sensors are moved over. If you'd rather not do it in the garage, any Tokoroa mechanic or auto-electrician can fit it. Add a Rockarmor 12,000lb winch for getting yourself out of a soft skid site, and Phantom 9-inch LED driving lights for the pre-dawn starts that forestry and hunting both demand.

Lift kits for Tokoroa 4x4s

Forestry roads punish standard suspension. Add the weight of a steel bar, a winch and a tray full of gear, and a lift kit becomes the obvious next step. We stock two lift kit brands.

RAW 4x4 kits are our choice for modern utes. Each 2-inch (around 50mm) kit includes front coils, rear leaf springs and nitrogen-charged shocks, with load options so the kit suits how the truck works, whether it runs empty or carries a heavy load every day. Good picks for Tokoroa:

Ultima 4x4 covers the older and less common 4x4s that are still worth keeping on the road:

A lift kit is a bolt-in job for a mechanic with a hoist, and you'll always need a wheel alignment afterwards. Kits in the 2-inch range are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier first.

Popular 4x4s in Tokoroa and the South Waikato

Around Tokoroa, older trucks work alongside the new ones. The Hilux leads the way, from late-model N80s fitted with a Hilux bullbar and Hilux rock sliders to N70s that suit the 2005–2011 Hilux bullbar. The Ford Ranger is a common work ute, and the Ranger PX2/PX3 bullbar suits it. Navara drivers can lift with the Navara D40 lift kit, D-Max owners have the D-Max bullbar, and hunters running a Surf or an old Pajero can look at the Pajero lift kit. Contractors with a 70 Series can pair the LandCruiser 79 lift kit with a winch.

4x4 tracks and off-road clubs around Tokoroa

Kinleith Forest. The forest on Tokoroa's doorstep is private, working plantation land. Manulife Forest Management says access to its Central Region freehold forests is managed through access permits, and that hunters and motorcycle events are the biggest recreational users. The Cougar Park mountain bike tracks in Kinleith Forest run under a single permit held by the bike club, and the Waikato Endurance Club has a designated horse-riding area. Entering the Kinleith forests without permission is an offence, and police have made arrests there over illegal hunting, damage and theft, so treat the forest as closed to your vehicle unless you hold a permit from the forest manager. Expect logging trucks on any forest road that is open to you.

Pureora Forest Park. To the west, Pureora Forest Park has public 4WD access. The park straddles the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto ranges, and Mangakino is about 20 minutes' drive east of Pureora village. DOC's Select Loop Road, off Waitaramoa Road and SH30, is an easy drive on formed metalled roads, and the King Country 4WD group works with DOC to open and maintain 4WD tracks for public access nearby. DOC also notes that the Okauaka Ford is limited to light vehicles up to 3,000kg. There's no fuel at Pureora, so fill up in town.

Kaingaroa Forest. Further afield, the large Kaingaroa plantation forest opens to recreational permit holders for hunting and fishing. Permits are issued online through FIRST Security, every vehicle needs a current WOF, registration and at least third-party insurance, and the gates open from 6am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays. Access during the fire season, 1 October to 30 April, is at the forest manager's discretion.

Clubs. The local NZFWDA-affiliated club is the South Waikato 4WD Club, which meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Tīrau Hall. Rotorua has the Geyserland 4WD Club and Sulphur City 4Wheelers, and the King Country 4WD Club is based in Te Kūiti. A club trip is the simplest way onto land where access is by permission only.

Fitting your parts in Tokoroa

Kren Bits parts are designed for DIY. Bullbars, rock sliders and driving lights bolt to the factory mounting points with the supplied hardware, and plenty of South Waikato owners do the job at home with a mate to lift the bar. If you'd rather not, take your parts to your local mechanic, 4x4 workshop or auto-electrician in Tokoroa. Book a wheel alignment after any suspension work.

Tokoroa 4x4 FAQs

Do you deliver to Tokoroa?

Yes. We deliver to Tokoroa, Kinleith, Putāruru, Tīrau and the rural roads across the South Waikato. Smaller parts go by courier and bullbars by freight.

Do you have a store in Tokoroa?

No. Kren Bits is online only, so there's no shop in Tokoroa. Order on the website, or call us on 021 288 6816 if you'd like to check fitment.

What's the most popular bullbar for South Waikato utes?

The best-selling Rockarmor bars store-wide include the GT Hoop for the Ford Ranger PX2/PX3 and the Premium bar for the Navara D40, plus the GT Hoop range for the Hilux.

Can I fit a bullbar or lift kit myself?

A bullbar is usually a two-person bolt-on job with basic tools. Lift kits bolt in as well, but they're easier with a hoist and always need a wheel alignment afterwards.

Where can I get a lift kit fitted in Tokoroa?

Take it to your local mechanic or 4x4 workshop in Tokoroa. Any competent workshop can fit RAW 4x4 and Ultima 4x4 kits and book the alignment.

Do lift kits need certification in New Zealand?

2-inch kits are chosen to stay within normal road-legal limits for most vehicles. Bigger lifts, body lifts or oversized tyres may need LVV certification, so check with a certifier.
